You can time-shift with a VCR without having to pay monthly Tivo fees.

If you get two VCRs without macrovision protection you can edit video really cheaply (albeit in very poor quality).

As long as you're not concerned about best quality, tape is still a cheap and easy to use way to record something. Want to record some TV? Pop a tape in your VCR and hit record. Same thing to record sound. If the tape deck is knocked around while recording, it won't cause a skip where the entire medium is rendered useless. You can start and stop recording at any time without having to wait a minute for a lead in or lead out. If the recording medium is torn in half, a disc is ruined but a tape could be spliced and only loose part of it.

Discs are definitely better in more ways, but tape does still have some advantages.

That made my day. And that's saying something seeing as it's only 11:45 in the morning.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

One advantage of VHS is you can always fast forward through all of the FBI warnings, company logos, and other crap that a DVD makes you sit through.

Yeah, I hate that stuff.

And there's never just one! first you've got that FBI warning, then the "you wouldn't download a car" video and after that you (at least us Swedes) get's even another warning from our "anti piracy agency" and that one is even longer than the FBI warning!

Then, finally you get to sit through those awful DVD menu animations and listen to that single slice of music start over and over again as you flick through the menu to see what's on it.

cnet had a tutorial for skipping all that crap. Something like hit stop twice then play. I haven't tried it but it's on their site.

Until I got my DVR, I used my VCR as a poor man's DVR for a while.

One way VHS is still useful is if you want a bunch of movies for cheap, you can get them for a buck a piece at Salvation Army. In other words, 10 movies for $10 instead of 1 movie for $15.
