I've heard that Blue Dragon has Sakaguchi directing it, music by Nobuo Uematsu and artwork by Akira Toriyama. All of these are reasons enough for me to buy the games, yet i've never bought it.

Can you guys tell me, in your honest opinion, what you think about Blue Dragon and Blue Dragon Plus?
I absolutely loved Blue Dragon. It was pretty damn corny (voices and some story elements) at times, but it was ultimately a very fun RPG that emphasized older gameplay elements. I'm a sucker for old school RPGs; I'm playing Dragon Warrior 4 on the NES, and I like it as much now as I did when I first played it. If you're a fan of the older games, you'll probably love Blue Dragon.

Definitely get the hard mode though. It makes it a lot more challenging. Also if you're an achievement whore, you better be ready to devote a lot of time if you want to get some of the harder ones in Blue Dragon. Some involve maxing out the level and skills of all your characters, which is majorly time consuming. Others involve perfecting certain mini-game type sequences, which aren't necessarily that easy all the time.

I just beat this one a few days ago, actually. I found it enjoyable even though there was absolutely nothing new in there. On the positive side, everything was well done and I liked the use of "charging" in attacks and magic. I think everything in the game really combined various tried and tested elements (from FF and Grandia I noticed mostly) which worked nice together. Nobuo Uematsu's music was a mixed bag, with some very memorable pieces and some that faded off into the background all the time and could have used more work. Ian Gillan makes that boss theme though.

On the negative side, I felt the story dragged a bit towards the end and took too long to get going in the beginning. The idea of searching every little thing for items got tedious very fast too (hope there's an achievement in that at least!). I didn't care too much for the characters as they were far too clichéd, and in the case of Marumaro plain annoying. The whole thing felt a bit too long as well.

Also, around the 55 hour mark I managed to bug out the timer and it just jumped to 31476:33:20 (or something like that) for some reason. Did that happen to anyone else? :?

I also liked it too!! The only major problem I had was voice acting wasn't very good.
Huzzah for the Japanese voice track.
I am seriously considering using this. Are there English subtitles?

Yup. I've yet to find a game that offers a JP voice track and no subtitles.

I enjoyed it a great deal. Job classes, Dragonball Z aethetic, and an easy to follow save the world storyline.

Great game! And cheap too!
