What do you expect of the next generation of handhelds?

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

It's not very farfetched. Quake (1996) has been succesfully ported to the DS. Metroid Prime Hunters looks better than it and it was a launch title. This means that I'm pretty sure the next generation of handhelds should be able to cover the game up to 1999, when Half-Life was released. This also means those consoles should be on par with the Dreamcast.

Seriously, I think nothing will be more awesome that playing Starcraft or Counter-Strike with your friends while travelling. Do you think we will be able to?

I think Nintendo lost a lot of good opportunities to port Warcraft II or Command and Conquer to the DS, as well as those old shooters. I know it is possible but Nintendo doesn't seem to know it.
The main reason why quake has been ported to DS is because the source has been released for that game. Half Life is still closed source. So only Valve can port it, unless they release the source code of course.

Well, I personally want to see what comes in the next iPhone, but we will see.

Really, the future of portable gaming for me, are netbooks, and the iPhone.

There are plenty of netbooks you can even run half life 2 on, among other games. Sure the trackpad can be cumbersome, but I see plenty with a ThinkPad like trackpoint, which works really well for games (at least for me).

And I find myself less and less being in a position where a DS is less of a burden and if there is, it's just easier to pull out my iPhone.

On another note, I hope another Dingoo comes out that actually runs PS1 games well, and fixes the several other emulation problems. Now thats a handheld I wouldn't mind carrying with me.

I like the look of this thing.

http://mp4nation.net/blog/2010/01/venus ... p5-player/

I don't know what kind of specs it will have but it is obviously built for emulation and it appears to have an analog stick.

If Sony would be smart and listen to it's customers about what they want I think it could be on top of the portable market. I would love a psp with the following specs.

4.3" OLED touchscreen
Wireless N or at least G
Better video support (avi, mkv, etc..)
Dual analog sticks
100+ GB internal hard drive
Native UMD to hard drive copy
Clamshell design to protect screen

I want something thats really portable. The PSP and DSi are far from pocket friendly. I want scratch proof screens. I want mirco SD sized games with the ability to install them onto the system. I want TV out on my portable. I want to be able to play my home console on my portable through WiFi. And most importantly, I want a gaming experience that can't be found on a home console.

This is what I'd like to see, not what I actually expect:

- Wii quality graphics
- games come on cartridges (like the DS but with more storage)
- large, wide touchscreen
- lots of buttons and 2 analog nubs
- TV-out with HDMI cable
- uses AA batteries

I'd much prefer a clip-on rechargeable pack that also leaves the option for a double+ capacity. AAs waste too much space because of their shape. Tho I do keep an emergency AA-USB charger around.

I want to still be able to play it 10 or 20 years from now. I guess if it uses some non proprietary rechargeable battery pack, that would be fine.

What's out there right now is good enough tech wise. Personally I think portables have gotten more powerful and expensive than they need to be. The original gameboy was $90, games were cheap and plentiful and were designed for on the go playing in mind. I think something like new super mario bros lends itself to portable gaming much more than a portable god of war does.

I was talking to a friend at EA and he said they already have a prototype for the new nintendo handheld, and are working on games for it.

He said the prototype was no where near the final though. Said the thing was huge.

Are you sure that's not the DSi LL
