I'd recommend to anyone that has one and its still working to ditch it and get a slim. They seem to be pretty solid.
To lose PS2 Emotion Chip game compatilbility? No Way!

in the area of 400. I bought a couple other things so it is hard to say exactly. Got it from gamestop.

When you do so you can set it up so that the PS3 gets 10 GB and the other OS gets the rest of the hard drive, or the OS gets 10 GB and the PS3 gets the rest. It lets people stick Linux on the machine and run complex math, but you don't get full access to the hardware, so you can't just use it as a cheap gaming rig.
ah- that seems kinda worthless.
PhilExile wrote:Hey Nickfil,

I was curious, where did you get your PS3 60gb? I actually bought one back in late October from Gamestop and had nothing but problems.

In games, DVDs or even downloaded content, the screen would freeze, but the music/sound would continue. I had to hard reboot the PS3 to get it to work again. I'd call Sony and they would say it was fine and have me go through a BS step-by-step proceedure that didn't help at all. They even had me restore the firmware which caused it to crash hard with full-on screen artifacts, etc.
huh. I'll keep an eye out for that, but so far so good. When i start up the screen looks like it gets some noise or interference, but only once, briefly, when i start up. Wonder if that is an indication of things to come. I got the service plan, so if it does break down i guess i can get a refund or a new one.

ah- the slim just doesn't have enough time yet. I'm sure they'll start to break down in a couple years too. I also kind of need the backwards compatibility. I have a huge ps2 library and limited space in my home.

It isn't worth much for the average consumer. It is quite useful for academic work, though, as much of that is highly parallel and having a 6 core processor (I think one core is disabled in Linux mode) at $600 (launch price) is a bargain for them.

Um... No. Not going to "ditch" mine if it's perfectly fine on the idea that MIGHT break. Everything might break at some point. With this one device I have a library of thousands and thousands of games going back to 1995, running on real hardware without emulation, all playable with a single native controller. I don't want to have to buy another PS2. The PS1/2 games look pretty damn good on my plasma set thanks to the PS3's upscaler.

I'll stick with it.

I got my 80 gig from gamestop used too, I got the extended warranty with it. it seems to be doing great. I can't think of it having any troubles and it's been almost a year. I definitely prefer the added connectivity (usb and memory slots) and it's worked fine on all the PS2 games I have.
Ocelot, did it again...sorry Boss !

Did it look like weird green and white squares, sort of like JPEG compression? If it did, that's a sign that its going. I had the same thing happen with mine at one point.

I know you have the warranty at Gamestop, but you have to realize the following:

- You can only get another used 60 gb PS3 and since they are in short supply, you may have to wait months. No loaner is provided in the meantime.

- When you do get a replacement console, it will most likely be a refurb sent from Sony with its own set of problems. Also, Sony doesn't prioritize these being sent to Gamestop.

- You cannot exchange it for any other model, even if you want to. its the 60 gb or nothing and they don't repair your console ever, it just gets sent back to Sony.

This was all explained to me by the manager at the store I returned mine to. He realized it was a pretty crappy deal being that I just got this three weeks before and it had problems and I would have to wait at least a month for a replacement. This is why he called his regional manager and let me do the exchange for the Slim.

The Slim ended up being $30 cheaper (you paid $330 for the 60 gb) and the extended warranty on it was $40 rather than $50. So in the end, I also saved $40 and got two new games with it.

And you're right, the Slim could bite the dust too, just like anything else. However, the reason the original PS3s (and 360) have problems is because of heat. The Slim's processor was created with a smaller die and is MUCH cooler. The 60 I had was literally like a small space heater and LOUD. The slim doesn't exhibit that issue at all. The YLOD is a direct result of the console heating up too much and the solder coming lose on certain components.

Here is a good description from the guy who runs Hardcore Gaming 101. He also had a 60 gb: http://hg101.kontek.net/ylod.html

So, like I said before, I recommend returning, especially since you're saying it already displayed some odd behavior.

Also, someone else was saying I was throwing away all my PS2/1 games by getting rid of it, which is ridiculous. I did keep my PS2 and its hooked up to a Sony PVM monitor and looks fantastic. PS2 games do not look good upscaled, unless its like God of War and its been professionally done. If you look at games side by side, in motion, you'll see it looks goofy. Even Shadow of the Colossus, which runs 480P, looked like crap.

Anyway, I've said my peace. I just don't want you to be in a shitty situation in a month or so. Believe me, I went out of my way to get one with backwards compatibility too, but its really not worth it!

Good luck

yeah man- i get that there is a risk with the console and the warranty. I've been going to the same gamestop for years now so they all kinda know me. I had a problem with a ps2 i bought years ago- got a used one and it would break within 6 or 7 months. This happened 4 times. Eventually i just got a new one. They exchanged the used one for me for cash no sweat. Even paid me what i paid then, rather than what they sold for at the time.

SO i'm going to roll with the 60gb until it sputters out. Cross that bridge when i get to it.

The static doesn't look like jpeg compression. It looks more like an error from the cable. like static or something. Dots. Multicolor. It actually didn't even do it the last time i fired it up. Maybe the console just needed to be powered on a few times.
