bit the bullet- got a ps3. 60gb. Help.

Post by nickfil »

So i got the 60gb finally. Been waiting for one to come across my path for a long time. Retired the ps2 and plugged this guy in. I set up all the HDMI settings and all that.

And was overwhelmed with options.
PS2/1 options
and installing another os?

Are there things i should be turning on/off?
How do i get the best look out of my older ps2/1 games?

Congrats on getting a 60 GB PS3!! To get best look for PS1/PS2 games make sure in Game settings you have PS/PS2 smoothing turned on and PS/PS2 Upscaler I have set to full screen usually. I have had excellent results using these settings on my HDTV. 8)

Definitely use the smoothing option for PS1/2 games, especially if you're using a flat-panel TV. Can't recall the exact screen size setting, but I use the one that leaves the games in 4:3. I hate the stretchies.

As for the other OS thing, the PS3 lets you install a second OS onto it. When you do so you can set it up so that the PS3 gets 10 GB and the other OS gets the rest of the hard drive, or the OS gets 10 GB and the PS3 gets the rest. It lets people stick Linux on the machine and run complex math, but you don't get full access to the hardware, so you can't just use it as a cheap gaming rig.

Hey Nickfil,

I was curious, where did you get your PS3 60gb? I actually bought one back in late October from Gamestop and had nothing but problems.

In games, DVDs or even downloaded content, the screen would freeze, but the music/sound would continue. I had to hard reboot the PS3 to get it to work again. I'd call Sony and they would say it was fine and have me go through a BS step-by-step proceedure that didn't help at all. They even had me restore the firmware which caused it to crash hard with full-on screen artifacts, etc.

Long story short, I found out that these are early symptoms of YLOD syndrome. I was fortunate enough to get a store manager that was kind enough to take the system back fully, rather than issue an exchange. Since its older system, I bought it used and therefore only had 7-days to return it for a refund. I think I returned it in the third week.

Anyway, I got a Slim and I have to say its much better. It runs cooler, its quiet and exhibits none of the random buggy behavior of my 60 gb. I did lose PS1 and PS2 compatibility, but to be honest, the upscaling and filter still looked awful on my HDTV and I have a CRT one! I decided its best to play older consoles like PS2 or Saturn on an actually SDTV, it will always look better.

Also, it does do Linux, but the functionality is hobbled by Sony. Programs can't access any of the higher end video processing because Sony is afraid of people making games for it or something ridiculous like that.

I just wanted to give you a heads up in case yours has been having issues like mine did.

Best Regards

Be careful on installing second operating system. May lockup PS3 depending which firmware.

Though no second operating system in this one, my son's PS2 got the yellow light of death during a "We got you" from sony on line firmware upgrade. I waited 3 hours before resetting and seeing that dreaded yellow light. Error code reported failed hard drive. Pretty coincidental to fail during firmware upgrade.

Had to shell out 162 for Sony Service Center fix. Lost all game saves and downloads. At least the replacement was same model with Emotion Chip with a shiny new shell.

I think those 60 gb models are bad news. I've heard the same story time and time again.

I'd recommend to anyone that has one and its still working to ditch it and get a slim. They seem to be pretty solid.
