If that's not what you're looking for, and want a LOT of action, but are willing to wait for the more profound moments, I highly recommend Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. It should definitely appeal to mecha fans. Hell, it was the first mecha anime I watched, and I loved it. I would recommend Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Gungrave, FLCL, Samurai Champloo to name a few of my favorite anime series.

(although it's not depressing or dark)

I second this. It's an awesome series, especially if you can watch it in HD. I'd also recommend most/all of Studio Ghibli's movies (Nausicaa, Castle in the Sky, My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, etc.)

I'd recommend Paranoia Agent or Serial Experiments Lain for a good dark mind screw like Eva. Also check out Basilisk, which moderately dark and depressing.

It does get a little (Almost annoyingly) heavy into the philosophy/religion aspect for a few mins. at the end, but that's typical of almost all Gainax's works. Plus a lot of little nods were made to it in EVA that you won't get until you watch this.)

Damn, how did I forget Kino's Journey? Possibly the best series on the face of the earth. "A Tale of Feeding Off Others -I Want to Live-" is the best episode of anything I've ever seen.

And yeah, I love Gurren Lagann, but I figured I would recommend it since he wants darkness and such. Still one of my favorites, regardless. It and Gunbuster/Diebuster are my favorite Mecha anime. I'd also have recommended Haruhi... but that's such a polarizing series, especially lately.

Steamboy is pretty meh, I will not recommend it, at all. I give it a 5 at most. The plot is seriously lacking and the characters are unidimensional and uninteresting. I went to the cinema to watch it and was severly dissapointed.

Slayers are Love Hina were two series I liked some time ago but now I find them quite lacking. However if you would like to try the Love Hina manga is 10x better than the anime.

You find Slayers lacking these days? I still love it. Slayers was the first anime I really picked up, and I still love it to this day.

Granted, I haven't watched the series in a while, just the OVAs. I'd still like to check out this new series that just started up - I saw some episodes at the AWA before this years, and it looked very entertaining.
