Re: Anime Suggestions
It's not always action, but If you want a good, deep, and philosophical anime, I recommend Kino no Tabi/Kino's Journey. http://www.anime-planet.com/anime/kino-s-journey
If that's not what you're looking for, and want a LOT of action, but are willing to wait for the more profound moments, I highly recommend Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. It should definitely appeal to mecha fans. Hell, it was the first mecha anime I watched, and I loved it. [Also, it's made by Gainax, the same people who made Evangelion.] http://www.anime-planet.com/anime/tenge ... ren-lagann

Re: Anime Suggestions
I'd recommend Paranoia Agent or Serial Experiments Lain for a good dark mind screw like Eva. Also check out Basilisk, which moderately dark and depressing.

Re: Anime Suggestions
WOO!!!
ANOTHER EVA FAN!!!!!!
Big fan of the series myself (Check out the new "Rebuild" movies that are being released) and love the whole irony of the everybody gets fucked by the end of it premise.
Anyhow check these out:
Outlaw Star
Big O (Best described as Batman: The Animated Series With Robots and a jazzy
soundtrack.)
Cowboy Bebop
FLCL
Gun Smith Cats
Riding Bean
Gunbuster (Lots of little nods to this in EVA including a few segments in the OP and more)
Lupin The III
Ghost In The Shell
Virtua Fighter
Genshiken
Tenchi Muyo!
Tenchi Muyo! GXP
The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya
Beck
Eureka Seven
Black Lagoon
Royal Space Force: The Wings Of Honneamise (Gainax's first (And extremely pretty) piece of animation and the former most expensive piece of Anime ever produced (Later eclipsed by Akira) which follows the story of wayward and unmotivated astronauts as they make the fist manned trip into space. It does get a little (Almost annoyingly) heavy into the philosophy/religion aspect for a few mins. at the end, but that's typical of almost all Gainax's works. Plus a lot of little nods were made to it in EVA that you won't get until you watch this.)
Steamboy
Hellsing
Full Metal Alchemist
Rurouni Kenshin
Steamboy
IGPX
Mobile Fighter G-Gundam
Macross, Macross 7 and Macross Plus
Nadesico
Blue Submarine No. 6
Dot Hack Sign
Nadia And The Secret Of Blue Water
Perfect Blue
All Purpose Cat Girl Nuku Nuku
The Slayers
Saber Marionette J
Trigun
Escaflowne
Record Of Lodoss War
Saint Seiya
Blue Gender
Detective Conan (Case Closed, in the US)
Samurai Champloo
s-CRY-ed
R.O.D.
Wolf's Rain
Love Hina
Maria Holic
And many many other Animes, almost anything from the 80's-late 90's is pure gold but anything from before or after that era is either awesome or crap.

Re: Anime Suggestions
I'm not a big anime kind of guy, but anything from Miyazaki and his studio "Studio Ghibli" has always been good in my book.
Princess Mononoke
Spirited Away
Ponyo
Grave of the Fireflies
Naussica
etc

Kanon
Code Geass
Full Metal Alchemist
Air
Kimi Ga Nozomu Eien
These will match what you said about movies. Except for Full Metal that's a bit cheery with little bit of sadness.

Re: Anime Suggestions
Damn, how did I forget Kino's Journey? Possibly the best series on the face of the earth. "A Tale of Feeding Off Others -I Want to Live-" is the best episode of anything I've ever seen.lisalover1 wrote:It's not always action, but If you want a good, deep, and philosophical anime, I recommend Kino no Tabi/Kino's Journey. http://www.anime-planet.com/anime/kino-s-journey

And yeah, I love Gurren Lagann, but I figured I would recommend it since he wants darkness and such. Still one of my favorites, regardless. It and Gunbuster/Diebuster are my favorite Mecha anime. I'd also have recommended Haruhi... but that's such a polarizing series, especially lately.

Re: Anime Suggestions
Steamboy is pretty meh, I will not recommend it, at all. I give it a 5 at most. The plot is seriously lacking and the characters are unidimensional and uninteresting. I went to the cinema to watch it and was severly dissapointed.
Slayers are Love Hina were two series I liked some time ago but now I find them quite lacking. However if you would like to try the Love Hina manga is 10x better than the anime.

Re: Anime Suggestions
You find Slayers lacking these days? I still love it. Slayers was the first anime I really picked up, and I still love it to this day.
Granted, I haven't watched the series in a while, just the OVAs. I'd still like to check out this new series that just started up - I saw some episodes at the AWA before this years, and it looked very entertaining.
