Or better yet, you can buy it in English and in cart form at Gamereproductions.com - plus others!

I bought a translated Sweet Home from there not too long ago - not a bad game, but a little flawed.

Off the top of my head, good Japanese games to get would be any games in the Kunio Kun series - particularly Nekketsu Kakutou Densetsu (4 players!). It might be described as Smash Bros or Power Stone for the NES.

Yeah GameReproductions.com is cool, but they use eproms instead of the mask roms that official cartridges came on meaning that your game will literally erase itself after a few years.

Good games:

Kid Dracula (Akumajou Dracula Special: Boku Dracula-kun) - Basically a kid's version of Castlevania, but it's still a great game. You get weapon upgrades at the end of each level, similar to Mega Man.

Wai Wai World 1 and 2 - A Konami mash-up series. Each game has a roster of Konami characters and features levels from various Konami franchises.

Star Wars (Namco version) - It's a Star Wars game that seems like it was made by people who have never seen the movie. You fight Vader at the end of every level, and he transforms into all sorts of crazy things, like scorpions, bats, sharks, etc..

Splatterhouse - Splatterhouse but with super-deformed characters.

Spartan X 2 - The Japan-only sequel to Kung-Fu.

Somari - Sonic the Hedgehog translated to the Famicom, with a Mario sprite replacing Sonic. It's wacky. In fact, the Famicom has a ton of awesome pirate games. . .

That should get you off to a good start.
