Some albums you might like (or might hate):
Gang of Four's Entertainment
My Morning Jacket's Z
Comets on Fire's Blue Cathedral
Television's Marquee Moon
If interested, check out allmusic.com. They can give better album synopses than I can...

Any of their three albums is great stuff. Their "fourth" album, Renegades, is all studio covers from a lot of known artists. A lot of people like it, but I'm not a fan. The self titled debut, Evil Empire, and The Battle of Los Angeles albums... all great stuff.
Also, their live material is like crack, I can't get enough of it. Unfortunately they don't have a whole lot of live material released on CD but they do have 3 DVDs. One great thing about them live is Morello's variation in his guitar solos, coming up with more and more wacky shit. They're just incredible live though, so much energy. Putting them in a studio is like putting fire flies in a bottle. They're still great, but you can't seem them fly around.
Rage is awesome.

Was gonna call my friends and get them all togeather, I was gonna go and start a band.
But everything i wanna do is already been done, why would I wanna go and do it again?
I got into ska right and i mean RIGHT when "Sell Out" started getting radio play on the east coast rock stations ( This was 1997 mind you). As of today, you dont EVAR hear ska on the radio, which blows nutsacks...

The the first tony hawks pro skater soundtrack is one of my favorites. I'm downloading 3.4 gig of ska right now with only 18 hours left to go.

I know that sucks I love ska and it disappeared way too early. I guess the record companies don't think people will buy it or something, they rather promote crap like Ting Tings and commercial rap instead.

That reminds me MF Doom, Dangerdoom, and Deltron 3030 are all great.
Re: help me pick music
great suggestions so far.
I'm already into/own a lot of what's been mentioned - RATM, Black Sabbath, and all the classic stuff - beatles and whatnot.
I guess after trying to refocus, I'm really trying to amass a collection of definitive albums. Artists' best albums, like Metallica's self-titled and ride the lightning. Stuff like that.
Ska - I like 5 iron frenzy for ska.

Close but no cigar - try Master of Puppets if you're looking for their best.
Also, given your tastes, you might start hunting down these:

I don't I agree with all picks/placements, but there's LOTS of solid music to be found on that list.
