I made some posts on Defunct Games about this. I could post em here but that'd be a tad redundant, I think.
And, racketboy: isn't that what they're doing? They're calling it "Bomberman Zero." In fact, I don't think there is really a canonical 'main' series for Bomberman. It kind of deteriorates after the first few numbered ones. All the last major ones had unique names. Generations? 64? Hero? Jetters, or whatever the hell it's called?
As far as I can tell, this is a spin-off. Or rather, all Bomberman games themselvesare spin-offs.
Good point -- however, with most of the others, they still had the same look of the Bomberman we know and love. Not sure why they can't keep it half-way cartoony.
(BTW I totally forgot they are calling this Bomberman Zero -- which isn't quite different enough IMO)

We will always have Saturn B-man...10 player, cartoon gfx, perfect. We have Bomberman running at all of our our game rooms, it's a game that everyone can get into and play. I wonder if Hudson has any creative input for the 360 version, or did they just get a fat wad of yen to turn the other way.
This is the most disgusting shit i've ever had the displeasure to whitness in my life. This is like turning SuperMario into a serious, realistic looking, dramatic, dateing game. This is really really said. I think who ever decided bomberman needs a make over needs to be sent to a desert island.
