Japan's Mega Drive 1 however used its power switch as a "cartridge lock". It stopped unplugging a game while on, then later kept out most western games (exceptions include EA games, Sonic & Knuckles, or the 32X).
i happened to have a MD adapter for the SFC, and popped the ones not working in the wondermega to the SFC instead. it actually worked but i needed to change the region setting to 3 (i think that was PAL?) so confusing is that these all worked in a mega drive the original owner had. so perhaps the "not turning on" thing of the wondermega is some sort of region lock.

otherwise my wondermega might be just weirdly faulty.

Was pretty sure that PAL MD cartridges had the same type of indentation on the side as JP MD cartridges, but check the lock-out trigger in the cartridge slot. If it's kept down, the console won't power on. It can be removed, but the Wondermega is not a fun console to go rooting around in.

It's also possible to modify the console to play cartridges of all regions, but I wouldn't recommend it. Much less expensive to screw around with a model 1 or 2 MD than mess up a Wondermega.

Here's a video of the mods, anyway:

They don't, they're the exact same shape as American carts.
