It sounded more like corn619's laptop came with Vista, ran poorly, then he put XP on it and it of course ran better. I know that's the same story I have with my laptop. Yes, Vista is more stable on hardware designed for it, but the poor performance can never be magically fixed.RyaNtheSlayA wrote:Yes, well, the main consistant problem goes back to what I said. People are running XP fine sure, that computer they bought in 2002 has worked fine. Problem is, they are trying to load a brand new system on it. Thats not really the problem in the OP's case here but my main point stands firm. People don't want to change, and don't want to upgrade their system in the first place.
New laptop, better faster stronger...laggy?

Older. Not wiser.

I was just trying to help the poster and was not trying to argue Vista is better than XP presently. To be honest, I don't know or care if it is because I don't use it anymore. I have the same Laptop and had the same problems with my emulators and made the switch and presto, all problems solved. Not to mention all my pre Vista PC games ran beautifully again.

A Celeron is a slower clocked version of the current or 1 version old CPU with 1/2 the L2 cash. Its the budget series of chips released by Intel, nothing more. Intel does have something called HyperThreading which causes OS to see 2x the number of cores the CPU really has, but a lot of CPU's released by Intel since the P4 have had this.noiseredux wrote:I'm no expert, but since you had the Daft Punk/Kanye West reference in the title, I'll at least try. The Celeron processor COULD have something to do with it. I've heard that Celeron processors use some sort of.. virtual processing? Anyone know what I'm talking about?
Even considering the above statement, your laptop is still a heck of a lot faster then any console before the current gen ones.
steps I would take:
1: Update drivers(already suggested) & Vista. Old drivers can cause weird things. Vista pre SP1 is a total dog well trying to do a lot of things(no, its not just the users). They are on SP2 right now so make sure your running that.
2: Virus scan. Even thou your laptop is new, it could already have some malware on it. Heck, systems have been shipped loaded with the stuff on it.
3: Disable your virus scanning well your playing. It eats up system resources. With Vista your going to need them. remember to turn them back on when you go back online for web surfing and file sharing
4: Clean Vista out. Uninstall the unused useless apps that came pre-installed with your computer. Use the hard drive cleaner built into windows then defragment your drive.

i'd try this first, just because its free.Mozgus wrote:Very weird. Try using Direct3D/OpenGL modes in those emulators and see if there's any difference.
http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/snes/zsnes.html this is the snes emulator i had the best luck with.
http://www.emulator-zone.com/doc.php/genesis/ is a page with the different sega console emulators i came across. I've used the genesis emulator, but thats all off of this site. i can't remember the other sites i went to but emulator-zone.com has a really good selection.

Windows 7 will solve all our problems and disagreements... or not.

Saturn | Dreamcast | Jaguar | 3DO | PSX | PS2 | PS3 | NES | N64 | GameCube | Wii | PSP | GBA | DSi XL | 3DS XL

Been using it for months now. It's a step in the right direction. Not a leap. I still felt the need to dualboot with XP.PhilExile wrote:Windows 7 will solve all our problems and disagreements... or not.

I think that it's probably the OS. Regardless of whether or not you believe that vista is worse than xp, most emulators are made to run on xp and thusly have issues in vista. I would absolutely recommend installing xp, you'll definitely get a speed boost.
I've got one of the first generation eeepcs with a 900 mhz processor that would probably just have trouble booting vista, let alone running emus on it. XP however runs perfectly and I can run emus all the way up to N64 pretty damn well.

Re: New laptop, better faster stronger...laggy?
man vista sucks. I saw a benchmark article in a pc magazine compare windows xp vista and the 7 beta version from 3 months ago.
and the buggy beta version of windows 7 had more frames per second on all games they tried, than the "complete" retail product that is vista.
ofc xp has still more fps, but the difference between xp and 7 wasn't as great as with vista.
so yeah I do believe it's vista that's effing up the guys emulators
