You're right, if you want to play PS1 backups you'll need a modded system, PS1 or PS2. As far as just PS2 goes, I go the freemcboot way myself. Most consoles I own are hard modded in one way or another, with the sole exception of my PS2's; I just put hard drives in the PS2's, soft mod the memory card, and play my PS2 games off the HDD.

Need FreeMCboot? I'll install it on your PS2 Memory Card for free if you cover postage both ways.
