I've owned my SCD2 since it was new, never a problem. I rescued a SCD1 for $10, all it needed was a fuse. Another SCD1 has passed through, was never able to get it working right. My experience, both personal and gained from others, is that the SCD1 is less reliable due to the moving tray but functionally, by that I mean gameplay, they are no different. All models of Sega CD are compatible with both Genesis 1 and 2 but having the correct grounding plates is important.

Not rare, more like artificially heightened value due to eBay collectors etc... as any problems like broken drive door rubber bands, bad drives, and burnt out fuses can be fixed easily with the correct technical knowhow.

Do you still have the Model 1 you couldn't fix?

Maybe somebody here on the boards could fix it to keep another working Model 1 in circulation.

Nope, sold it for a song. No word from the buyer if he ever got it working. Well, I got back out of it what I paid for it. It needed a fuse and I had proved it would power up with the fuse bypassed, but I could never get the drive to spin. I got the tray working, but the drive wouldn't spin. I even installed a known working drive out of my other SCD1 and it still didn't spin. I tried known working ribbon cables, still nothing. My guess is that something on the main board that controls the drive was shot, never could identify the source of the problem.

Nice. Just like I figured, everyone's got a different experience. Anyway, thanks for your input.

Last questions; what's a fair price for each version? If you saw one at a pawn shop or game store what would you expect to pay for it?

The CDX is rather pricey about $100 plus But either of the stand alone units complete with all the components are about $50 - $70 depending on condition. I bought mine for $50 each both are model 2 with model 2 genesis and never once had a problem. Ideally the CDX is the definant way to go I love mine they are compact and run off one psu. Grittykitty has a cdx on sale here for a really good price in the forums. http://www.racketboy.com/forum/viewtopi ... 22&t=11058
