What I've actually taken to doing is selling stuff HERE before I sell it on eBay.

Are you really including how much gas it takes you to get to the post office in you shipping fees?

The eBay fees are definitely getting up there, especially on fixed price auctions. I've been turning to Craigslist a lot more to sell things. I usually end up selling for less, but get a lot more considering I avoid the listing fees and some of the crazy ending fees which have taken up to 15% from my auction value. Downside is that CL has a whole lot of flakes on it, but it seems that a lot more people are turning to it to search for items.

I've personally never had issues with my shipping charges, and I'm surprised someone would go through the trouble of questioning a seller over shipping. If I don't like the shipping someone is charging, I move on to another auction. That's not to say that I approve of getting profane with the guy though.

It's really a part of the cost of shipping the item, isn't it?

you're damn right it is.

Technically it is in the ebay/paypal agreement that one cannot charge to compensate for ebay/paypal fees, so OP was in the wrong there. As far as i'm concerned, his only wrongdoing was mentioning it to the buyer. It's not like the auction said that there was a fee for paying with paypal, but like I said, it's against their rules to charge to accept their payments (see "payment surcharge"). As far as I know though, there isn't a law against offering a discount for other payments. I know locally some shops give a small cash discount. :)

In OP's defense, It always was (and should still be, screw ebay) acceptable to include packaging materials, labor/time, and gas in the shipping cost. That's why it's called "shipping" and not "postage". As a seller I always did this within reason (no gas figured in, since I had daily carrier pickup), and as a buyer I expect it to be figured in. Especially if I'm buying from someone who sells for a living, I want a good packing job.

from a buyers standpoint, like someone else said, shipping is a part of your cost for the item. add up your total cost, and buy the cheapest one.

I guess I'll just consider the fees and gas and packing materials and all that into the starting price and have super low or free shipping from now on. People cant really say much about that Im guessing. Anyway I revised the auction to have free shipping but start at 8.99. Im sure someone will complain about me revising the item now. Its crazy Ebay charges insertion fees and final selling fees and paypal fees. Three fees all from one comapny...geez.
Really the whole thing is stupid. Obviously shipping isnt free. Someone has to pay for it and it is still the buyer. Its just that shipping has been shifted to the items price. How much of a cheap ass can you be to complain about $5 for shipping when in all likelyhood the item would have sold for the 99 cent starting price? Ohwell.
