honestly i'm pretty sure all intelligence is based on memory. math remember formulas, history remembering dates (and shit that happened on said dates) spelling is entirely about memory for the most part. i could go on and on and on but im tired. just think about if you were born with only a five minute memory span. how far in life could you get only remembering the last five minutes. not very far.
or maybe im just really really sleep deprived

I think IQ tests are not effective if you are too old. And since you are writing in those forums I assume you are too old for an IQ test XD
Not that it really matters mind you.

Re: So my father took me the the shrink for one of those IQ test
I prefer logic to intelligence. I believe that any problem can be solved with minimal knowledge on the topic, and a lot of logic. So, I try to improve my reasoning as priority above knowledge. What I'm trying to say is that logic can be applied to any reasonable topic, instead of intelligence, which is far more specific. So, I would like a logic test instead.
I'm not saying that knowledge is useless, though. Like I said before, you must have at least minimal knowledge on a topic to be able to successfully apply logic. Otherwise, you might as well just guess.

I don't think that means much
as far as I understand, 147 is a genius level....maybe you are
but what I heard is that IQ tests were made to test out the slow people...so if you are a slow person it works to see how much can you do but if you are "normal" I guess it doesn't matter if you get 100-120-140 or whatever....
I also understand its highly unreliable and same people can take same test at different times and get different scores. But I guess its fun. I don't think It actually can tell how smart you are, but how much attention to details do you give or how fast can you response. I think IQ is a load of crap but it is fun

Manic Depressive eh? Tough call - at least now you and Moz have something in common
I got a 139 when I got tested and looking for Dyslexia, which I also scored positive on. High IQ and Dyslexic - go figure...

Not to rain on your parade or anything, but don't feel too pleased with the score. 100 is average (and always is the average) but if you haven't noticed, the average person is very, very stupid. I'd say 140 is not far from where you should be.
People tried to tell me the same thing when I was a teenager.PhilExile wrote:Manic depressive? Now, granted, I don't know you, but I'm guessing this is a bullshit diagnosis. Your a teenager right? Shitty times for most. Its rough and you'll get through it.
Re: So my father took me the the shrink for one of those IQ test
I wouldn't take the diagnosis to hard. Most people suffer depression even severe depression at times in life. I went in after a couple suicide attempts that occured within a year (rough year) they got me some meds to help even me out (bipolar swinging back and forth but mostly manic depression as opposed to the much more enjoyable mania) anyway unless you start doing crazy things out of nowhere and scaring yourself and others or not remembering things etc etc (read up on it a bit) I wouldn't worry about it.
I've known people who did poorly in school and ended up being doctors and stuff. Personally I generally suck at school but am considered by most to be quite intelligent (no iq test to back it up though!)

Actually, that's not true anymore. The average IQ has apparently been gradually increasing. Today, the average is in the neighborhood of 109 or so. If you go back a couple hundred years or so, when schooling was uncommon, the average then would be borderline-retarded today.

Re: So my father took me the the shrink for one of those IQ test
Even if general intelligence is increasing (I'm not sure that's true), 100 is still the average IQ score by definition because the IQ score is a measure of your intelligence in relation to the average person. It is a standardized score so the top of the bell curve falls right at the 100 mark.
Also, he does have something to be proud of with that score because the standard deviation on an IQ test is 15 points. His score of 147 is over 3 standard deviations away from the mean, which places him in the top .1% of the population.
Also, I wouldn't too quickly throw the manic-depressive classification out the window. Granted, as far as over-used diagnoses go, it ranks up there pretty high. And yeah, we could argue that the DSM-IV is a flawed diagnostic classification system (because it is). But imperfect though it may be, it is the only diagnostic system accepted here in the US, and we don't have enough info to say that he doesn't meet the criteria for being bipolar either. And if he does, a true manic can get themselves in a lot of trouble off meds. I've known people in a manic phase to spend all their life's savings trying to prepare to save the world from an apocalypse they thought for sure was coming... until they were out of the manic phase. Those are some dangerous consequences and treatment isn't a bad idea. Suffering is part of the human condition and we've all got problems, whether they fit into DSM categories or not. In a way, it's fortunate to have a diagnosis because you're more likely to get your insurance to cover the price of treatment.
