As far as kid-friendliness goes...... The game is all about, ya know, "lolis", which some might find a bit off-putting. But to kids I bet it just looks like a game about kids.
I'd argue it doesn't even go that far. Your character is a girl in a pretty dress who shoots cartoonish monsters. There really isn't much that plays up the loli stuff like you do see with Hyperdimension Neptunia.

OK...I am not sure what "lolis" are, but this:

sounds like something my daughter would love. As long as there isn't any realistic violence or sexual content, I am fine playing it in front of my children. I think I will play it a bit without them (and with my wife in the room) to see if it is OK first. (She vetoed Final Fantasy XIII the other day because of the violence in the opening sequence.)

I haven't run into any glitches yet, so it may be swaying my opinion, but Splatterhouse (the newest one, I'm not sure what year it was. 2006?) is awesome. Not the best 3D beat 'em up around, but still good. It has a nice feel to it, with both the looks and the gameplay. In a way it feels like something else I can't put my finger on. It has that comic influence, it has horrible things in contrast to disturbing humor, and has the whole nerd into evil stuff gets a chance to be a true badass despite not actually liking the real life versions of evil stuff thing.

I also have Dragon's Crown now. Don't know when I'll get around to playing it, but I'd love to get on and play with anybody if they want.

What else have you played? Deathsmiles is good, but I can think of at least 3-4 others (including several Cave games) from the past 10 years that I'd easily rate higher.

I actually think Deathsmiles II is pretty meh. And yeah, if I made a Top 10 Shmups all of them would be verts EXCEPT #1... which is Deathsmiles.

Off the top of my head, I prefer both of the last two DoDonPachi games, Futari, Crimzon Clover, and Jamestown all more than Deathsmiles. I LIKE Deathsmiles but it has seen less play from me than any of those others and I am less enamored with its fairly boring system compared to most of the others on that list.
