My lawyer buddies and I talk about this often, as while I agree with Popo my lawyer pals insist to flee from any and all police officers who have no lawful reason to detain you.MrPopo wrote: The first rule of the police is to do whatever the fuck they tell you. Doing anything else has no upside.
Yes. In most states, including the one I live in, if the police try to detain you for no lawful reason you are free to flee. Last time I saw someone try to flee from the police I saw them die from police gunfire, in the back, so no. And when we talk about this law my pals all agree being compliant is #1, but they would actually flee. "They wouldn't stand a chance in court against me". I'm all "Who says you'd make it to court?".
And you can beat the charge, but you'll still end up getting arrested.

Exactly. If what they're doing is unlawful then resolve it in court, but at the moment they have the leverage and the power.Luke wrote:My lawyer buddies and I talk about this often, as while I agree with Popo my lawyer pals insist to flee from any and all police officers who have no lawful reason to detain you.MrPopo wrote: The first rule of the police is to do whatever the fuck they tell you. Your law pals are insane. Comply with police orders for your own safety and the safety of those around you. If you are, in fact, detained unlawfully, there are plenty of procedures for obtaining redress at a later date.Luke wrote:"They wouldn't stand a chance in court against me". They're also kind of dicks.prfsnl_gmr wrote: Your law pals are insane.
Any legal conversation with them turns into a pissing contest of who knows what law better and which cases support their claim...even when they agree.
So let's name these guys Russ and Josh (because those are their names). A typical conversation with them would go:
Russ- I really like Sonic the Hedgehog.
Josh- Did you know that Sonic first appeared as a cameo in Rad Mobile?
Russ- I did. Did you know that Sonic also makes a brief appearance in the movie Encino Man?
Josh- Everyone knows that. I doubt you know that Sonic's shoes make an appearance in Donkey Country Two?
Russ- My little sister knows that. But Sonic's actual first appearance on a Nintendo console is Super Smash Brothers Brawl.
etc...
Every time we hang out it takes me back to when they were in law school at Wake Forest. Yes they rub people the wrong way, but they love showing off and always being right (even if they are wrong).

When I was looking at schools I checked out Wake Forest. Definitely got that southern good ole' boy vibe from it. Felt like the college version of my high school. Not surprised they came out of the law school like that.Luke wrote:Every time we hang out it takes me back to when they were in law school at Wake Forest.

Wake Forest is an excellent school with an incredible campus and even more incredible professors, and I can only speak for it's law school...but every school has it's group of jerks. My experience was that Wake had more jerks than UNC.
I do love my buddies that went to Wake, and I call them jerks all the time, but they do know they bought a degree. They've told me they bought their degree.
Prof_gamer went o Wake as well and had a different experience, so I'm talking about two guys out of a class of a few thousand.
Both friends grew up in homes on a golf course, both were average students with SAT scores around 1100, both were accepted to Wake Forest Law School.
They didn't get in for "their smarts" so the "good ole boy" situation may have been applied.

Oh, wasn't trying to cast doubt on the quality of the school, per se. My high school was fan-damn-tastic, academically (except for the AP bio prof who refused to teach the evolution portions), but it still had a lot of that good-ole-boy feel to it. And visiting Wake Forest I felt a pretty similar vibe.

FYI
My wife and I both graduated from Wake Forest. It was as good as anywhere, and most of the people there were OK. Law schools generally attract a lot of douchebags, however, and Wake Forest is no exception. (Thankfully, the girls there were super-duper hot.)
