Finally, somebody else who noticed the gradual degradation in the voice acting!
MGS1, whilst being an overblown Hollywood pastiche, had at least the voice over work to carry it off. MGS2 barely manages to hold it together, but part of it's charm is that feeling that everything might disintegrate before your very eyes. No other game in the series comes close to reaching the madness of 2.
MGS3 is a mess. The voice over work is terrible. This is compounded by the fact that most characters have become even more two-dimensional than that of the first game. I find its gameplay features charming enough, scoping out sentries in FPS view whilst hiding in the grass etc. (I didn't play subsistence). These are nice additions, but the emphasis on "survival" is essentially reduced to micro-managing.
Peace Walker fixed almost everything I disliked about MGS3 in terms of gameplay, whilst achieving stupendous new low's in terms of voice work, plot, character development and general cohesive narrative writing. It does, however, sport the most elegant and streamlined MGS control scheme yet when playing the HD re-release (or equivalent remapped controls in PPSSPP yeeeeaaaah).
I would venture a little further with 3 to test the waters for Peace Walker, but it doesn't get any better in terms of the issues you've raised.

Should Peace Walker be played before or after MGS4? I ended up just watching the movie on Youtube for MGS3. I wasn't dying a lot or having trouble it just was really irritating for me. I appreciate others like that game but it wasn't for me. I just started MGS4 and am already liking it more in the first 15 minutes or so than MGS3. I'll have to get further into it to see how it holds up.turbolegs wrote:

The series timeline is basically MGS3->Portable Ops->Peace Walker->Ground Zeroes->Phantom Pain (then Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2, Solid, 2, 4, then Rising, offhand).
Release-wise, though, Peace Walker actually came out after 4, so there'd be no real need to play it first.
That said, MGSV isn't just picking up where the PSP games left off in terms of plot/characters, but also mechanics. The whole Mother Base setup with building forces, researching tech, and so on is from those games too. I'd recommend playing Peace Walker before diving into MGSV.

I would rank the console MGS games as follows:
MGS 3 Subsistence (couldn't stand the camera in MGS3, the free camera makes all the difference)
MGS 1
MGS 2
MGS 4
All great games to me, but for me 3 and 1 definitely are the biggest stand outs in the series.
