Ugh, that's the worst. I've seen some companies do something similar with their performance reviews; the bottom 10% of the company goes on the shit list and will probably get canned, even if the company is staffed with a bunch of amazing people. There's always going to be a bottom X% thanks to basic math; it seems dumb to punish them.Ack wrote:I remember going into a class in college and being told that no matter what are grades were, the professor intended to fail half the class. They should institute a similar rule for your job performance then. Only half the professors keep their jobs at the end of the year depending on how well their students did.dsheinem wrote:That dude sounds awesomeAck wrote:I remember going into a class in college and being told that no matter what are grades were, the professor intended to fail half the class. Alright! My Southern Live Oak Trees are thriving through this hot Texas summer. I have two young oaks planted last year & they almost didn't make it due to being transported & planted during the summer.
I'm 50/50 on that though, I love trees, and once a Live Oak gets set its hard to kill... but the rancher in me has a knee-jerk hatred reaction to those damn things.
Just don't ever plant a cedar. That's just a crime against nature.

Honestly, it was a terrible class. Honors Physics II. I remember walking in one morning and the professor announcing we were screwed if we hadn't already taken classes on differential equations. Eventually a friend and I started going to test preps while drunk. I passed with a 44. He failed with a 42. The highest grade in the class was sub-65. Most of the kids who were in it dropped out of the honors program immediately after. I never took another science class. It ruined physics for me, as well as math.

They already do, except the students' performance is irrelevant. Tenure is for the ones that pass. Another year of adjuncting is granted to the failures.Ack wrote:They should institute a similar rule for your job performance then. What are the rules for tenure? I've seen some incredibly crappy professors get it and some wonderful processors not get it and have to move elsewhere. Is it based on publications?

I also think that system is flawed. Some of my best professors in college werent tenured while some of my worst dont give a F profs were. Some seemed to look down upon teaching an undergrad class and probably more interested in research and such.Ack wrote:What are the rules for tenure?
