Re: sonic the hedgehog master system
Sonic the Hedgehog contains practically no text aside from the menu at the beginning of the game and the timer and counters on screen. Language should be of no concern. Playing a PAL copy of Sonic the Hedgehog should work OK in an NTSC Sega Master System.

Slight derail
There's a special hack of sonic 1 that has FM sound. It's glorious. I play it on an actual SMS.

You shouldn't have a language barrier. The PAL version of the Sonic SMS game was just in english, but the booklet and box had multiple languages on it. That game along with like 6 others came over to the US too with just a UPC sticker glued on the back for our market as PAL games work in US SMS systems all the same.

Re: sonic the hedgehog master system
I was told the only difference between the exceptionally rare US release and the PAL version is the US version had a sticker on the box.
Re: sonic the hedgehog master system
Essentially once unsealed, the origin of the box's contents is lost.
Either way the game was developed in Japan. So I'd assume NTSC tools were used.

Ok thank you for the help I can't wait to play it
Re: sonic the hedgehog master system
The SMS just as a very basic tip was very open ended outside of Japan. The US-NTSC, the UK/EU/AUS PAL market, and also the Brazilian carts all ran on the same hardware in whatever country of origin. I'm not recommending you buy Brazilian games unless you're well off or just insane with your money (as there's some really nice releases) but they do work, all the other stuff do too and the PAL stuff has some nice Genesis and GameGear conversions that are quite fun and just unique stuff too. Had that PAL junk came to the US back when Tonka was helping murder the thing for Sega they'd have probably been much better off.

For most games US SMS1 is ideal. You get full speed and RGB output.
A few later games expect 50hz and/or the SMS2.
Japan was another dire story. They swiftly axed SMS, leading to unused FM soundtracks.
Sometimes even the Japanese dialogue like Cloud Master and Shanghai.
