The pacing in most Dragon Quest games is just fine, with some exceptions. The grinding in part I is somewhat forgivable, as it is the first "JRPG" ever. Parts II and VII are unnecessarily tedious in parts. But the remainder of the series moves along at a nice clip.

I agree.

I generally only grind in most Dragon Quest games for two reasons:

1. I am a few gold/dollars/doubloons away from a nice piece of gear (or two) at the nearest town and I really WANT it bad. I don't need it most of the time, just want it.

2. I genuinely enjoy the battle system and feel like looking at the charming enemy artwork.

Speaking about dragon quest i want to try the series out. I know there's several remake's/ports tossed around various systems. Should i play them in order or just go for the newest when the 3DS port comes out?

I have got to disagree with you guys. Dragon Quest does not and has not ever respected the player's time. Everything is dragged out unnecessarily and the lack of attention paid to giving the player any opportunity to have short cuts or cut down on tedious character micro-management has turned me off every time.

Add to that a game system that has none of the fluidity or customization that I have come to expect from the genre since FFV - and that was back in the mid 90s. The story should only be one part of the game's payoff. The game itself should be a joy to play while you make your way there.
Maybe now Nintendo will acknowledge Metroid has a fanbase?

If the 3DS port comes out. I'm still not convinced it's going to happen.

I wouldn't worry about taking them in order. Some of them are connected, but pretty loosely (DQ1-3 and DQ4-6). Personally, I'd start with one of the best. You really can't go wrong with any of the DS ones, and Dragon Quest VIII is also really good, and looks great to boot.

If you do want to go in order, go with the rebalanced DQ1+2. There's a GBC version and an SNES version. Either one would be fine. Then slide over to Dragon Quest III on SNES.

The second trilogy is even more loosely connected than the first, but all of them are good.

I really do hope we get the remade DQVII... I'd be all over it.

I'd say play them in order to watch the series evolve.

1 & 2 - GBC
3 - GBC
4 - DS
5 - DS
6 - DS
7 - PS1
8 - PS2
9 - DS

Just out of curiosity, how many Dragon Quest games have you played through? I don't see anything there, especially from parts III-VI, that is really any different pacing-wise from other RPG series. Even Final Fantasy.

I'm also not much of a fan of Final Fantasy V, so... yeah, different strokes and all that.

I'd probably personally go for SNES on III, but the GBC version is good, too. Less so potentially for I & II, as the translation has some technical issues on the SNES version.

Heck, the NES version of III is still good.

At the time I was playing through DQ games the SNES translation of III wasn't all the way there yet and I haven't bothered to keep up with things since, so GBC vs. NES are the two options in my mind.

Yeah, those are the two I've actually finished. I've advanced a bit in the SNES version now, and it is finished, although there is the occasional grammatical error. It's mostly fine, though. I don't think the Monster Medals are any huge loss, and it's absolutely a stunner of a game graphically.
