I agree the whole thing is ridiculous. There's nothing wrong with targeting genders with certain toys. And there's nothing wrong with playing with each others' toys. Heck, I wanted to play with my cousin's Barbie... but then again, it was an astronaut Barbie, so it was actually cool. ;)

I think we're getting to a point where we're confusing "equality" with "sameness".

I like what Target is doing here. I have a daughter, and as a man, I did not realize how much sexism pervades our society until I noticed how it treats her. For example - and similarly to the "building sets/girl's building sets" photograph in the article - I recently saw t-shirts, designed by the same company, that read "genius" and "girl genius". The "genius" shirt had a picture of a boy in it, and the "girl genius" shirt had a picture of a girl, the implication being that the "default" gender for a genius is male. This obviously isn't a huge deal, and I am not going to start a letter-writing campaign or anything, but I now notice things like this all the time. (My city has two semi-professional soccer teams, the Eagles and the Lady Eagles. If the women's team is going to be called the Lady Eagles, shouldn't the men's team be called the Gentleman Eagles?) Accordingly - and while children are certainly free to play with and wear whatever they want - gentle, almost subliminal "reminders" of sanctioned gender roles are everywhere, and I am glad to see Target doing something to diminish them.

I didn't mean to demean servicewomen, but with all those flowing hormones, and with the US Army doctrine of aggressive training, such bad phenomena are bound to happen. The opinion of many is that it's best to segregate the sexes when a lot of friction is involved, as is the situation with most armies. A while ago they paraded soldiers wearing high heels. This gender equality/sameness issue is going to get a whole lot more ridiculous.

You mean to tell me you're not looking forward to the human race turning into homogenized, soulless, self-serving zombies that only accept what they see on facebook and whatever the television tells them to believe?
What's wrong with you, bro? Better a gramme than a damn!

Hey y'all. It's your old pal Redneck McCutoffs here.

*Wearing nothing but overalls, chewing on a stick of hay, while muddling through a corn field*

Now whut done happened when people confused sex with gender? Ain't dat difficult folks, as sex is what your genitals you were born wit', and gender is if you relate to women or to men. Now if you're a woman who wants to be a man, get one of dem clitoral surgeries. If you're a guy who wants to be a gal, get your hormones straight and change dem privates too.

But round here, you want to be a woman and you have a penis and testicles, get a boob job and call yo'self a woman...ain't happening. If you want to "be" a woman, do it. Don't just cross dress and call yourself a woman. Sure, you can say you identify yourself as a woman, but you ain't til you get neutered. Sheeee-it, I can Moo all I want and say I identify as being a cow, but until I have four stomachs I'm a dude pretending to be a cow.

*kicks a rock, spits*

I ain't never got no award of courage for puttin' on my sister's dress. That ain't empowering. Now if I chopped of my family jewels and wiener, got me some boobs and actually lived like a woman...whoo-ee boy. That takes some balls. Literally. But being who I am don't show no shred of courage. If anything I should be ashamed by not being who I was the entire time and not lie to everyone my entire life, and I'm in my fiddies. For fiddy damn years I would have been lying to everyone, including those who I always promised to tell the truth too.

And dagnabit, if I cut off my little trouser snake, I'd still respect my mommy and diddy. Shoo...They done named me, so I should keep my original name and not make up some damned name like that Lady Gaga do. My parents named me John, and wiener or not, changing my name ain't hanging who I be. Part of having courage is being yourself, right? If I dressed like Spider-Man and said "Call me Spider-Man" that would be an act of courage? Shoo. Hell's nah boy. A boy named George can dress like Barbie, and dat don't bother me...but if he says to call him Barbie, no way bo. He's still George. He ain't no Barbie.

All's I's saying is that trans people okay with me, and I'm open to people changing to be happier. But when a Tranny is a Tranny, dey better own up to it. If you have boobs and a dick, you are a Tranny, not trans gender and we gonna call you dat. You can say sumtin like "I'm going through a transition" but sex and gender be way different. Just let ol Redneck McCutoffs know if your boobs come with a wiener, because sexually you are a man.

Pulsar_t wrote:This isn't an isolated decision though. Girls with that extra amount of testosterone have always played with boys' toys, but now there's a movement demanding equality regardless of physiological characteristics, and admittedly I used to play with Barbie and her useless boyfriend from time to time, but never asked specifically for such toys at stores. Another example would be woman soldiers, which is pointless unless they start wearing exoskeletons. I like how they cry foul when female recruits get harassed in the "workplace" by their male counterparts. It isn't optimal for males to work in female-dominated fields either, especially when they sync up their periods and leave the male(s) in another uncomfortable reality

Let's just agree to disagree. I used to be PC around feminists and some "progressive" types, but now I don't give a damn.
You are saying some pretty disgusting and ignorant stuff. You are almost saying women are asking for it and deserve it if they are part of male dominated workfroce. And what are you talking about, women syncing up their periods?

By the way gender is made up and ever changing by society, it's not biological like sex.

I'm not sure I completely agree, though. Much of gender is affected significantly by biological traits. Different hormones, different brain chemistry, and so on.

Are there portions that are societal constructs? Sure. But it's not purely societal. On average, there are things that appeal to men and things that appeal to women, and some of it is far more innate than simple social conditioning.

You can post until your fingertips form blisters, but some women are indeed asking for it. We all know that male and female college students prepare their studies on the possibility of either getting laid or married. At least most of them.

Not beating my chest at all, but I'm married to someone I worked with, and have been hit on at work more than a handful of times. Which leads me to...

On St. Patrick's day in an office in Raleigh a co-worker said something about me wearing green and not being able to pinch me. Told her that then I would have to pinch her for not wearing green. Next she showed me the bikini line of her panties, which were green.

People flirt hard at work. If someone is a nuisance, report it. If some guy or gal (or both) mention an interest...say "Yes" or "No thank you". Not that I advocate it, but as long as it's not obscene I don't see nothing wrong with a little bump and grind between co-workers.
