Just played through Alien Trilogy on the Sega Saturn. While I don't see why so many people loved it as strongly as they did (early, pre-Goldeneye/Medal of Honor days of console FPS and you can feel it) I have to say the soundtrack is far and away the best thing about it.
Criminally Underrated/Overlooked Game Soundtracks
Re: Criminally Underrated/Overlooked Game Soundtracks
Speaking of Jurassic Park, the soundtrack for the self-titled game on the SNES has a really good ambient, dark soundtrack.

This thread made me instantly think about the Xenosaga series. All three of the main games have good music, but the first is by far my favorite.

And Ghost Trick is another game I almost never hear anything about sound track, but it's another one of my favorites. I even like it more than any of the sound tracks from the Phoenix Wright games.

Jet Force Gemini comes to mind for having an incredible underrated soundtrack, even under Rareware fans. It's definitely one of the best OST's of the N64 library, and Robin Beanland's best work after Conker's Bad Fur Day.

What about the Deus Ex: HR soundtrack? I LOVE the main theme. And not to forget the DarkSiders soundtrack!

Woah, this is incredible stuff. Is the game as good as the sound?Xeogred wrote:

Ocean games always had a really cool sound to them. Didn't they have a special chip for their stuff or something?
Always thought this was some of the creepiest music to ever come out of the SNES. I could picture it in Super Metroid:
- Shinobi!
Sega Genesis (Model 2), Sega CD, Sega 32X, SNES, Nintendo 64, Gamecube, Game Boy Family, Phillips CD-i Model 910, NES, Atari 5200, Virtual Boy, Atari Jaguar, Playstations 3-4

It's pretty good! Straight up Contra basically, very very hard and arcadey though. It has a big level select from the start so you could check out a lot of levels and hear the cool music easily.Gooseberrysoda wrote:Woah, this is incredible stuff. Is the game as good as the sound?
I love going back to the N64 Rare games and noticing how they all have a similar sound to them.Scanty wrote:Jet Force Gemini comes to mind for having an incredible underrated soundtrack, even under Rareware fans. Drudging this back up from the depths.
I have little to no love for the SNES' sound, but I can't help but dote on these three OSTs. They aren't really overlooked or underrated in Japan, at least, but seem relatively obscure to Western audiences.
Seiken Densetsu 3
All of the recordings on Youtube are horrendous, so here's a nice piano medley. I particularly love Swivel.
Tenchi Souzou/Terranigma (mentioned on the first page, but a couple more choice tracks)
Prime Blue
Samayoeru Tamashii
Quatro-dan
Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei (So difficult to choose a sampling)
Daedalus
Mazurka
Game Over
Jakyou no Yakata/The Occults' Manor
Two other really great soundtracks:
Legend of Mana
Deedle's Organ
Cliff Town Gato
Port City Polpota
Beyond the Truth
Blue Melancholy
Shin Megami Tensei (Mega CD)
Embassy
Game Over
Cathedral

I loved the OST from Max Payne 3. The ending scene was epic and it was in large part due to the amazing soundtrack.
