I have the real conundrum. I have both versions and I love the vmu mini game so what do I do? Guess I have to beat both!

The GameCube iteration is the definitive version of this game. The vast majority of people did not and would not play SoA over progressive VGA on their Dreamcasts anyway. So that's a moot point in comparison to all the advanced benefits and extra content the GameCube version offers.
'In a world, where not everyone is the same, and there are people who actually put more stock in visual/audio fidelity and quality than some tertiary bits and bobs: One man wants desperately to usurp their interests, and tell it like he sees it....' -A Michael Bay Film

ie. The differences aren't negated simply because they don't matter to you, specifically. The extras in Legends are largely superfluous, and liable to be ignored by many. Is your point about Legends now moot?

Also, it's not just through VGA. The differences in video quality go beyond just the resolution, and audio quality takes a hit regardless of the video connection.

If you want the best, you have to pay for the best. Simple as that.

However if the lesser Dreamcast version is one's only option, then by all means, roll with that.
Would you care to step out for a lovely candlelit dinner and maybe a nice bit of copping off after? 'Cause I will go. Let's do this thing, already.

Not at all. You argue the Dreamcast is better because of its higher fidelity over progressive VGA and slightly cleaner audio. I argue the GameCube version is better because of its copious content extras and shorter loading times. Ultimately though, we are both as right as we are wrong, as it's all totally subjective. The only truly moot thing here is our argument in the first place.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around anyone who prefers the Dreamcast controller to anything.

If you can believe it, I absolutely love the Dreamcast controller for playing Marvel vs. Capcom 2. For some reason, it just doesn't feel right if I'm playing it with something else.

Really, my only gripe is the placement of the analog stick and the weird stiffness that it has. It's an odd bird for sure.

It's better than the Jaguar pad, the NES Max, the N64 controller, and vegemite.

N64 controller is better.

I still don't understand what Sega was thinking with the Dreamcast controller's dangle cord hanging out the front by default.

It has to do with the VMU slot. They had that little notch for the cord. ;)
