Cities Skylines - the thread of the game

Post by noiseredux »

has anyone else played this game? I never really got into the SimCity games or similar, though always found the idea of the genre interesting. All the praise for Cities Skylines has finally convinced me to check it out, but it's definitely daunting when you first get started. I know there's plenty of online tutorials and all but if anyone's played and has some basic tips to get me up and running I'm all ears. New Awesomeland went broke within 15 minutes of playing. :|

Also if you are playing it, feel free to use this thread to talk about it, share screenshots, discuss mods, etc.

that's fine. I'll make a city on my own. And I won't let any of you move there.

Have you tried using a cheat code to give you all the monies?

alright so after reading a couple of tips on how to get started out, I was able to get the ball rolling. The first half hour or so is probably the steepest learning curve in the game. Your inclination is to just "build a city," but you can't do that. You need to start really small with the basics. You need to start out by just building a few roads extending from the highway, figure out your water/sewage situation and where you're going to get power from. You need to put in pipes and electricity - but just enough to satisfy those few small roads you've started with. And then you start building some houses and businesses.

Once that beginning got out of the way, things started to become far more second-nature. And I can't tell you how hugely rewarding it was when I saw a truck drive in off the highway, pull into a driveway and a family got out and made themselves at home. My wife came in the room for a while and found herself fascinated as well. Giving me suggestions, arguing about placement of buildings and how I should zone areas as I started to expand.

I've added an elementary school, high school, hospital, police station, fire station, a playground, a 2nd fire station and power plant, a bus station, a cemetery... my population has jumped to 2,400 people already.

Before I knew it 3 hours had passed. And I seriously mean I didn't realize that so much time had elapsed. I basically bought this game because of all the praise it received from trusted sources, yet I had no idea if I'd even enjoy this style of game. What I've found is something hugely compelling. I went to bed with ideas still popping into my head. (Overpasses to get to the industrial district!)

Here's some pics:
