I'm playing it, but I gotta admit that I don't like the Lost Levels much. At no point have I felt psyched about coming home to play it. It just feels like a chore.

Watch a speedrun of it, especially a Big John speedrun. That'll get you hyped.

Funny how people tend to gravitate to different genres. For me Lost Levels is light and fun and easy peasy. But that FPS stuff you play? I'd be lucky to make it out of level one.

Oh, on a whim I downloaded the original 8-bit Lost Levels from the eShop yesterday afternoon. Way more brutal than the All-Stars remake. Got my ass handed to me rather quickly.

Good on you.

While not brutally difficult, those games do "bring the challenge". I first learned about these two around ten years ago and felt I missed out on some the the best NES titles.

Yeah, I know what you mean. Playing FPS is basically second nature at this point, I've been doing it for so long. It's one of the few genres that I specifically crave, and I seek them out endlessly. I've probably beaten more of them than any other genre. I've beaten 14(including expansions and hybrids) already just this year. Heck, if I go back through the Games Beaten threads to 2010, I've beaten 72 of them in the last five years. When I'm on GOG making requests, they're almost always FPS, and I will almost always immediately buy new FPS that end up on their service.

But platformers? They just don't appeal to me. There are some I love, like the original Mega Man series and Castlevanias, but Mario? Sonic? Just not for me. They don't thrill me in the same way.

But we'll always have RPGs, Bone.

Yeah, that's how I feel about them, too. I was an RPG fiend back in the NES days, although I was a huge Mega Man fan as well. But I really did tend to gloss over a lot of the action games... and those were two that didn't get a lot of fanfare. They're both great games, and they're short enough to blast through in an evening. And they're not incredibly hard like the Ninja Gaiden games or Battletoads, or even Batman, but they're tough. And they feel fair, which makes all the difference in the world.

Too lazy to google, but I believe both games were released at the end of the 8-bit era. I also don't remember them being on the cover of Nintendo Power.

However, I said they weren't brutally difficult. But! I'd like to see a gamer under the age of twenty try to complete either of the two. I'd say that Shatterhand is a bit more difficult than Batman, but that's up for debate.

Great list Sarge.

Luke if you haven't played these NES games yet, I believe you would enjoy them:

Code Name: Viper
Journey to Silius
Kabuki Quantum Fighter
Low G Man: The Low Gravity Man
Power Blade
Power Blade 2
Strider
Vice: Project Doom

Much challenge, such awesome.

Thanks!

I own all of them besides Journey To Silius (and Kabuki) , which I've been wanting to own since it was released. I remember hearing it was "Part terminator plus part Blaster Master" and I was sold. Expensive cart though.

Might need to finally pull the trigger and purchase Silius.
