What type are internal NES controller and power connectors?

Post by c0wt00n »

I could really use some help, ive spent serveral hours searching the internet and cant find anywhere that gives a type.

I'm looking for the board connectors on the NES that the controller wires and the power/reset wires plug into.

Im pretty sure they are JST connectors but I have no idea what model. I ordered some HX 2.5mm pitch from digikey for the controller connectors and they were too big. Im going to order some with a smaller pitch and see, but Im desperate enough Im turning to the internet for help because I don't want to randomly keep ordering parts and hoping I get lucky, heh.

The blue is the 5 pin connector that the power/reset wires plug into, the other connector is one of the 2 controller connecters.

any help would be VERY much appreciated, thanks!!!!

Sorry, I don't know what specific type of connection those are, but maybe I can help.

You're already using DigiKey, that's usually my first stop. :D

If you don't already own one, get a digital caliper like this one. I'd recommend just getting the exact one I linked, the reviews say that it's accurate (very important).

I just looked up any random connector on DigiKey as an example. Almost everything on DigiKey has a link to the datasheet in the description. Take this one for example...

http://www.jst-mfg.com/product/pdf/eng/ePH.pdf

Scroll down and you'll see that it gives precise measurements for it. You can use the caliper to measure out the connector on the NES board and compare, that way you wont just be guessing. This is why a digital caliper is essential, otherwise you might find it impossible to measure in mm and be accurate. It may take some time to find the right one, but it's not impossible (unless the connector is proprietary or no longer made).

If you're able to find the right one, be sure to post what it is!

edit: I'll also say that, if you can't find a connector that'll fit, all isn't lost. I'm assuming you need to replace the female plug because it was damaged or something that'll it'll otherwise no longer work. If you can't find the correct plug, there's ways around it, although soldering is required.

Are you able to desolder such connectors and, then, solder relevant wires/connections straight onto the PCB? As long as it is an internal work and it is performed good it won't affect the external appearance of the NES nor its functionality.

^ That's pretty much what my suggestion would be. Although if you hard wire the connection, then you can't remove them without desoldering. Might be a pain in the ass if you ever have to disassemble the NES again, like another repair or modification. What I would do is find any kind of matching male and female connection with the correct amount of pins and appropriate size. Wire the the male connection to the PCB, then solder the female connection to the wire harness (or vice versa with male and female, doesn't matter). It'll function, and you'll still be able to unplug the wire harness whenever you take the console apart.
