Couldn't you in some games just disable the auto-save feature, then choose not to save after each usual chapter or checkpoint? In that case if you eat it, you're back to the beginning. I'm fairly certain stuff like RE Revelations has one of those 'you are dead' type screens then wants to reload, if you were saving.

I can't think of any on those platforms, but I think there's a bunch on the Wii and Wii U.

I never lost all my lives in any of these games, but I'm pretty sure you'll get a game over if you do: New Super Mario Bros. / 2 / Wii / U, Super Mario 3D Land / World, Kirby's Return to Dreamland, Donkey Kong Country Returns / Tropical Freeze. There's plenty of games on the Wii and Wii U that follow the more traditional game format and might have game over screens, that aren't indie or sports.

It's not about the difficulty of having a "Game Over" screen, it's the excitement of knowing that I could get to the final boss, die, and have to to through...the...entire...game...again.
Grab Spelunky and come back to me in a few months.

Actually I think Luke should play 360 Ninja Gaiden 2 on "Path Of The Master Ninja" difficulty. That should keep him busy.

I don't believe any of these are on the PS3 or 360, but just spit-balling a bit: Rogue Legacy, Risk of Rain, Shiren the Wanderer (Fuurai no Shiren 3/other mystery dungeon games).

I can think of Two region free shmups for the 360: Eschatos (including Cardinal Sins and Judgement Silversword) and Shooting Love 10th Anniversary ~XIIZEAL & ΔZEAL~ (I've only played XIIZEAL but I assume both games are similar) only let you start with a couple credits, so you won't be able to credit feed to the end, even if you want to. At least not until you've sunk enough time into them to unlock more credits or improved your game enough so that you only need the limited continues the game makes available.

Eschatos is the one I'd most highly recommend. It's an awesome game with one of my all-time favorite soundtracks AND it's pretty affordable for an import; you should be able to find it for around $30.

I'd say that Deathsmiles is a better game, but the fact that it gives INFINITE CONTINUES right from the start makes it maybe not what you're looking for.

I own this one. Do you die "die"?

Again, it's not about difficulty, but the threat of no continues.

I'm not sure about continues. But I've heard from reliable sources that Master Ninja difficulty is serious shit.

As others have said, I believe you'll find it difficult finding modern console games that don't use checkpoints, have true game overs that send you to the title screen, or incorporate a lives system. You can find a few games like that on PSP and DS though. For example on DS you'd likely enjoy Commando: Steel Disaster or Metal Slug 7. On PSP I bet you'd enjoy the challenge of Ultimate Ghosts 'n Goblins.

If you really REALLY want to feel the pressure of facing crushing defeat if you die, with a devastating feeling of loss with no continues, you have to get into the roguelike genre. Since you have a DS, I recommend these:

^Thanks for dropping some knowledge Exhuminator.

Even with GTA III, if I die, I restart from the last mission so when I complete the game I have zero deaths. That's cheating, probably, but I like seeing "0" on the death column.

Found one fix for my needs, Fighters with Arcade modes.

um, you are welcome?
dsheinem wrote: That said, your best bet is likely shmups (both systems have a decent selection of retail shmups) or fighters.
