The subsidies are for the consumer - not the farmer. Without the subsidies the farmers would have to charge actual costs; some would get out completely, and you and I would be paying $14 for a gallon of milk.

Minnesota just killed over 8 million birds this spring (bird flu). Without the government subsidizing their losses we'd have been paying $6-7 per dozen eggs. That's not the farmers benefitting - they are going to get compensation for the product they produce. 5 dozen eggs at $10 or 1 dozen eggs for $10, whatever their costs are to produce that dozen eggs. The money that went to the farmers was to keep OUR costs down, not theirs.

There are few areas I think subsidies do actually benefit the greater good, but this is one that does make sense.
It always seems to be dairy and meat thats subsidized. Maybe our health as a nation could be much better if the government stopped subidizing and we paid actual fair market value for meat and dairy, or at the very least helped farmers who grow fruit and vegetables for human consumption instead.

Farmers get more chances with subsidies than any rancher- and subsidies for meat products very, very rarely actually go to the rancher.

Plus, you wouldn't want to be paying "fair market price" for agricultural products. Seriously, be glad subsidies exist. I know you are looking about removing it for meat and dairy for health reasons, but the fallout would generally be catastrophic. Not to mention that certain nutrients are much, much easier for a poor person to get out of meat or dairy rather than their substitutes, including price and availability.

There's a general joke in the States for a loser guy to say he has a girlfriend in Canada, which is why you've never met her, but he's totally got a girlfriend.

The ultimate culmination of it is in this song from Avenue Q where the massively closeted gay guy tries to claim he's heterosexual:

 Apparently "Teenagers with Attitude 2" (the followup to "Teenagers with Attitude", which in turn is tied into the reboot/prequel "Zordon of Eltar") failed in raising its funds on Kickstarter and so the filmmaker's abandoning the project. "Zordon of Eltar" is one of my favorite fan films at the moment and is in its own way better than Adi Shankar's "POWER/RANGERS".
