Honestly.

Love the fact I've dodged this bullet for decades. I try to avoid stupidity...I'm down to eighteen fb friends for a reason.
I still find it hard to believe, he was on several national news spots. Every gaming site in the mid 2000s had something up about him. Heck, Ack even got to interview him.

Am I the only one that can't be bothered to give a shit about frame rate and 720p vs 1080p? Like I'm legitimately interested in my games running as best they can, but I honestly don't care. I have an Xbone, which people love to point out is underpowered supposedly. I dunno it seems fine to me. Am I missing out on some glorious new frontier and I just don't realize it? I'm watching framerate comparisons on YouTube and screen shot comparisons and I honestly can't see a difference. If I do it's so minor my eyes can't even process it.
There is alot of complex science that can answer this question, but I can best sum it up this way. There is a formula for how much information your eye can read called resolve. Everyones resolve is different, if you have trained your eyes, say you work in video/film/animation, your resolve will be greater than someone who has not.

To explain resolve, lets use a hypothetical situation. So lets say you have four 50 inch TVs that are the same size and aspect ration but different resolutions - 480p, 720p, 1080p, and 4k. If you are setting 8-10ft away (aka how most tv rooms are setup), you will not be able to tell the difference between 720, 1080, and 4k. If you are 6-8ft away, you will not be able to tell the difference between 1080 and 4k. If you are 6ft or less away, 4k is the best. Now if we moved up to an 80 inch tv, everything changes, same with moving down to say a 28 inch tv. But people want something to brag about, and something to deride those who do not think there way about. So resolution becomes a much greater thing than it really is for most people.

Framerate is a different set of issues. But most people cannot tell the difference over 30fps in games. Heck movies are still shot at 24fps because that was the slowest they could be shot and the sound would sync (if you see a setting on a camera that says 24p, that is what it means).

At the end of the day, all that matters is does it look good enough for you? If so, great, piss on what others think. I still game on my pc in 720p, because I sit six feet away from it and it still looks awesome (though now it is getting strained). But 4k will be the new standard, since it will sell tvs, and people will still sit 10ft away from it while using a 50inch tv, and feeding it vhs tapes. It is the way of the world.

Nah, the difference between 720p and 1080p if you're far enough away isn't really huge. A lot of last-gen stuff isn't even running internally at those resolutions, often stuff like 640p and scaled up.

I have to admit I really like how Outland looks at 1080p from like two feet away on my 23" monitor, though. ;)

Can't do that, although I'd like to.

...Hmmm. You're on an Internet forum, which is a form of social media...

But when you regulate your friends on fb it's a great way to keep in touch with friends that otherwise you wouldn't be able to keep in touch with.

Try OBS for your recording needs. It compresses your video footage and works flawlessly. And it's free.Fraps will just eat up your hard drive space
OBS is good, so is PlayClaw. If what you're looking for, specifically, is game capture PlayClaw is about as simple to use as Fraps, but doesn't actually effect performance.

I think that the 3D is usefull on mario 3d land because the developers choose some wierd camera angles for some stages. I dont feel diference with the 3D on the precision on landing is still a bit off.

Yeah but it isn't the same thing as Facebook or Twitter by a mile. This is an anonymous hangout for hardcore gaming dorks. Not a vanity cesspool of first world problem melodramas and egocentric glamour posts. (Not usually anyway.)
Honestly I only ever got into social media (first Cult Zero, then Myspace, lastly Facebook) for dating purposes. And I was successful many times finding dates and sexy times through social media. Honestly thanks to Facebook, I was able to reconnect with a girl I thought I'd lost years ago, and now am going to marry come this October. So I will give social media props for dating purposes indeed. But that's all it ever was for me. Once I got her back I dropped social media like the snake pit it is. Maybe I'm just oldschool, but if I want to talk to friends or family, I simply call them, text them, email them, or actually visit them in real life. Meanwhile I don't care what they ate for breakfast nor do I want to read about it on their Twitter account.
----

I used to not like open world games, but I'm finding I'm actually interested in them now. I guess it's because during the seventh generation graphics finally got good enough for me to enjoy the exploration on an aesthetic level. I am consistently blown away by Red Dead Redemption's scenic vistas for example. Just riding my horse watching the sun set over a river is damn near revelatory. This is one game I wish I could play in VR. Actually, I'd like to play GTA V in VR even more.

Compared to today, it's funny how anonymity was one of the most alluring features of the "old internet."

Man I wish Livejournal was still active. That was my old hangout.

You didn't miss much. He was just a generic moral guardian, yelling incoherently at a phenomenon he doesn't understand.

Yeah I've had this discussion with my girlfriend many times, especially since we met at the turn of the century as anonymous people on ye olde interweb. It's amazing how in such a short time things have flipped from, "never let anyone know who you really are" to, "THIS IS WHO I AM, NOTICE ME."

I do like how social media has proven that even if you take that anonymity away, people will still be assholes.

The years before people like your own Mother and Aunt want to be facebook friends. I miss those days.

This is going to sound pompous, but that hasn't stopped me before. My friends on facebook mostly live in London or Hollywood. They're super busy with work and with kids. FB makes it convenient to chat.
