I'm sure this has been said many, many times, but all sorts of things can be a trigger for someone who is mentally unstable. Games can be one, but so can movies, books, propaganda, all sorts of things.
The scary part is that I think, in a few instances, his facts are correct. I don't agree with all his conclusions, or the extremes to which he takes them, but I almost don't see him as a schlub in this interview. Not completely, anyway. (I also find his politics fascinating, he's a squirrelly fellow to nail down.)
In the end, though, he may just be an attention-seeker... which, to some degree, I feel the same can be said about Ms. Sarkeesian. She's not exactly a gamer, either, yet there are folks that latch on to her rather specious claims... not unlike Mr. Thompson. I don't view gaming to be a prerequisite for criticism, so I don't dismiss either of their arguments for that reason, but because they are, at times, ill-informed or lacking in context.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
A "gamer" is a person who plays video games. Anita Sarkeesian plays video games. Thus she is a gamer. There are no other qualifications needed beyond that. The gatekeeper "true gamer" stuff is silly.
Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I think we can all agree that there are degrees of "gamer", though. I would argue the average forum member here is much more of an enthusiast than the typical individual. Hence, you are correct, the "gamer" term can certainly apply to her. I didn't bring that point up to argue any sort of gatekeeper status, simply that she's admitted in the past that she's not really a gamer. Saying that does not, on its own, invalidate her research. Just as Jack Thompson's non-gaming background, by itself, does not invalidate his. It's a terrible way to dismiss either of their arguments.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I just find it humorous because at the time Sarkeesian admitted to "not being a gamer" (well before her web series) I would have answered such questions in the same way. I had a lengthy dry spell - not purchasing any consoles released between the SNES and Wii. And now I'm a huge nerd with a PC-FX and VIC-20. People drop hobbies for long stretches, get into the hobby later than others, and so on. Not to mention those who play games but eschew the "gamer" label because they don't feel part of "gaming culture" or whatever.
Point is, we have no idea what she plays and how much. Maybe she only plays 7th/8th gen, maybe she was up till 3 last night playing Gradius on the X68000. Whatever the case she certainly possesses enough knowledge to critique video games, as indicated by her web series.

Just not enough knowledge to critique female inclusion in those video games under the proper frame of reference or actual context.BoneSnapDeez wrote:Whatever the case she certainly possesses enough knowledge to critique video games, as indicated by her web series.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I know many here don't play newer games but for those that do:
Am I the only one that can't be bothered to give a shit about frame rate and 720p vs 1080p? Like I'm legitimately interested in my games running as best they can, but I honestly don't care. I have an Xbone, which people love to point out is underpowered supposedly. I dunno it seems fine to me. Am I missing out on some glorious new frontier and I just don't realize it? I'm watching framerate comparisons on YouTube and screen shot comparisons and I honestly can't see a difference. If I do it's so minor my eyes can't even process it.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I don't mind resolution as much but framerate is something that I can get very fussy over in certain games.
Sure a visual novel or turn based rpg doesn't really need to run higher than 30fps. If a fighting game is under 60 though or a complex racing game starts dropping frames then I get pretty annoyed.
-----
Having spent some decent quality time with my n3DSXL I'm flabbergasted as to how much better of a product it is than say, the WiiU for instance! It feels so much better put together in terms of hardware and software integration. You don't really notice while using the WiiU (or at least I didn't), and while I'm sure it's durable, it feels like a cheaper, older device despite being far newer by direct comparison.

Older. Not wiser.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
While I can appreciate a game being technically optimized, a few missed frames or a lower resolution isn't going to ruin the fun factor for me. I do get annoyed when a game consistently runs badly if it's an exclusive though.Snatch1414 wrote:Am I the only one that can't be bothered to give a shit about frame rate and 720p vs 1080p?
Man just give up social media entirely. I did five years ago. I regret nothing.Luke wrote:I'm down to eighteen fb friends for a reason.

Re: Random Gaming Thoughts
I don't care about resolution, you are not able to notice that from the couch if you're playing. Even on the PC is kinda hard to tell, only way is with a huge screen.
Framerate is another issue, i didn't find heavenly sword enjoyable because of the framerate and had some problems on the PS3 version of half life 2 when it comes to platforming at half the frames you where 5 seconds ago. I dont mind a few deeps here and there but when it bothers the gameplay is when i have a issue.
As for 30 vs 60 i don't care. As long the game keeps it steady 95% of the time and it's playable im good.
I do have issues with field of view on FPS though.
