Got all four characters in Phantasy Star now. The balance of the party is really weird. Alis is a boss. The kitty cat sucks until he gets a weapon. Odin is decent I guess, good selection of weapons. Noah blows until he gains spells and the game trolls you by giving him a completely worthless starting weapon.
Awesome game.

Re: RPG Progress Report
Noah is the man.
I remember as a kid arguing with my cousin that Noah was a guy. My cousin swore vehemently Noah was a girl. He just wasn't ready for Japan's fetish with effeminate males.

I remember in the late 1990s having this same conversation about Ramza in Final Fantasy Tactics.Exhuminator wrote:I remember as a kid arguing with my cousin that Noah was a guy. My cousin swore vehemently Noah was a girl. He just wasn't ready for Japan's fetish with effeminate males.
Re: RPG Progress Report
The base stats of everyone in Phantasy Star are wonky as hell. Noah has the best natural strength and Odin has the worst. It's just that Odin's weapons have the biggest bonus and Noah's weapons have the weakest.
Personally I liked to keep Odin with the best gun I could get, both for the multihitting and because it does fixed damage; later in the game lots of enemies have sky high defense that it pierces.

Re: RPG Progress Report
Odin kinda sucks. he seems like he should be the tank of the party, but by the end of the game Alis and Myau hit way harder and takes hits better too. Noah is better too because he wrecks bosses.

Re: RPG Progress Report
I believe this was done intentionally as subversion of the cliche stereotype of the big bulky man being the strongest. Just as having a strong female lead be the protagonist was a subversion of the cliche of the genre during that era. Both of these elements I think happened due to the game's lead designer being female.alienjesus wrote:Odin kinda sucks.

I'm about 30 hours into my first-ever playthrough of KOTOR. Man, that game is really, really good. I like the D&D-style stats/feats.
Final Fantasy IX is the best one

KOTOR is the game that first got me into WRPGs. The first eight hours, I was like, "Man, when is this gonna get good?" And then it did. It finally all clicked.catnip wrote:I'm about 30 hours into my first-ever playthrough of KOTOR. Man, that game is really, really good. I like the D&D-style stats/feats.
Kinda like my recent playthrough of Pillars of Eternity, actually. Just took some time to really get rolling.
Enjoy it! It's a great game, and I wish I could play through it again for the first time.
