Yeah my GG gave up the ghost quite a while back as well.
I'm thinking there can't be too many fully functional systems still out there. Excluding mostly the Majesco units, I guess.

My Revision 2 (With the protective caps / less kung fu grip) arrived this morning, man updating is slightly annoying. The "request file" download from the site keeps bailing out halfway and downloading really slow. It is a 4MB file and it is pissing me off.

For whatever reason it downloads at 2.7kb/s from their site.

I've been reading this thread for awhile, and I may get a chance to buy a Retron 5 locally this week for a great price. However, does anyone know how I can tell from the box which version I'm getting? Or what the return policy is when buying this from an official retailer if I have the faulty version?

I have both the old and new models.... And the boxes look just about identical. I looked for a difference but couldn't spot one.

So are you purchasing this at a game store? Do they have a display model? That may be identical to what they're selling. The new models have removable "plugs" in the controller ports and the plastic between the cart slots is more rigid (not super-flexi like the original).

Honestly it seems like the crap ones have all been sold. My local game store only has the new ones.

My "crappy" unit is still doing well thank you very much (that is, as long as I keep it on 2.0 B6 firmware)

No display models; just one in box. I've heard mixed reports with Hyperkin's customer service, so I'm hesitant to pick it up not knowing what version it is. Oh, well. If it's there when I'm squared away money-wise, I'll give it a shot, but thanks for the help.

Just for kicks I checked the boxes again in better light and found some differences.

Not sure if this holds true for all models. Both of mine are black.

Old model:
Text on back of box is blue(-ish?) and white
Copyright info is at bottom of left-hand column of text

New model:
Text on back of box is red and white
Copyright info spans across the bottom of box

Again these are just mine - I can't promise anything!

That's plenty. Thanks for checking.

Do any of your boxes have a "wedge" at the top just like Hyperkin's latest version of the Super NES Supaboy?

For reference, the 2.0 Supaboy originally came in a rectangular non wedge box. 1.0 was sold in a plastic box. I have the retangle box with 2.0 Supaboy and the older plastic box bought by itself from a retro store. The newest has the wedge design you see below.

My local BookOff had Retron 5 units recently (now sold out) with the wedge box, I suspect these are the newest versions.

I believe all Retron 5 boxes have the wedge, old and new.
