It's obvious that the Engadget article is a plea against the social narrative of the Wii U. To make a response article taking the extremely facetious headline out of context and to reiterate the Wii U Narrative is ridiculous.
The hardware argument, for me, is kind of silly. Because none of these machines are particularly powerful. In the console space, power isn't even the determining factor, system architecture is. There's a lot of very sound reasons for why Nintendo chooses the hardware they do. The only mistake they made with Wii U there is choosing a more expensive base than their competitors. But even that was a compromise.
For every argument people make about these systems, they don't seem to understand the implication those changes would have. If it were a simple one like, why doesn't it have more RAM? Or it should be dynamically unlockable or have a boost clock option to squeeze more out of the hardware. Those are legitimate complaints about the hardware. But to complain that it isn't what's in a PS4 is just silly. Especially when you look at the games that are on Wii U. Are people legitimately feeling like these are being held back? Or are they just annoyed that EA and UbiSoft won't put out properly ported games? We have that problem on PC too, to note.

The comparative argument I always make is with cars. Most people look at specs and and automatically assume that the higher the numbers the better. So, faster CPU clock speed and larger number for RAM, that means it's better! Same goes for cars.
Which car is faster? Car A has a 1.8L 4-cylinder engine. Car B has a 3.5L V6 engine. Car C has a 5.2L V8 engine. You'd probably feel safe betting on car C. But maybe car A is a Lotus, car B is some standard mid size sedan, and car C is a pickup truck.

Fitting quote.

No, Forbes is a load of crap and I poo poo them not because I don't like what they're saying, but because, more often than not, their articles are crap and rely on clickbait and present their, often factually wrong, speculation as fact.

Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
I always heard about N64 and NGC droughts. For those who experienced it, how does it compare to the current Wii U situation?
Actually, its more impressive given that even Nintendo has given up on the Wii U by stirring NX news already.

Wow, that's quite impressive with the Wii u install base

I was young during the N64 era but as for the Cube, there was no drought. During its time (Q4 2001 to Q4 2006) there were many games from first and third parties that were very good.
Other than Wikipedia I am unsure where to get a list of releases in chronological order. One can look for it and compare.
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
I'm still sick of hearing about "droughts." If you wanna race through a game in a week then never play it again, I suppose there IS a drought.

Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
Most of the time if there's a video game "drought", it's because releases are being ignored. I don't think the N64 and GameCube were any exception to that. You'd have to go four or five years into the life span for the releases to just stop happening for months. At which point in time, everyone was gearing up for the following systems.
Obviously, since the Wii U isn't getting the support that either the GameCube or N64 received by third parties, the titles are coming out less frequently.
Also, today is very different, since there's digital releases, and that stuff releases almost every week on the eShop. Again, people could argue droughts depending on how they ignore releases, and their personal classifications.
I'm not a fan of the phrase video game drought, just because it's the wrong way to think about video game releases. It's extremely self centered in most cases, and is greatly defined by pure self satisfaction as opposed to actual release efforts. People don't reserve the term for when there isn't any release for an entire quarter. They use it whenever they're waiting until the next Zelda comes out (Or MGS, Uncharted, Halo, Gears, etc).

Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
I think what folks refer to as droughts are just droughts of good titles. Or at least just titles they're interested in. It happens a lot to me even on my favorite systems. It especially happened in the N64 era. Probably my least favorite Nintendo console, although there were still some spectacular games. Even the Wii saw a drought from my perspective. Just the way it goes.
Re: Wii-U thoughts so far
Ehh the N64 had some legit drought time if you care to pick between what we know now are bad games and good, and they'd be like 3-4month gaps in time. The gamecube though despite what people poo poo about it had a lot of 3rd party support along side of Nintendo so it had a solid flow throughout its life. The WiiU though has holes, just check release lists online and sort between eshop and physical releases and youll see it.
