How do you feel about the
Zero series?
It's hard but it's not
broken. The games are fairly consistent quality-wise. The challenges are sometimes over-the-top (spikes... spikes everywhere) but I never really felt like it was because the design was bad or unpolished. I know I'm in the minority but I honestly didn't find the Zero series to be an unfair challenge. I guess the difference for me is the Zero series is difficult by design as opposed to being difficult because the game was rushed to market by an apathetic staff on a shoestring budget ala X6. It's failing because I'm not good enough versus failing because the game is poopy.
Besides they give you an out if you're not concerned about your mission ranks, the Cyber Elves basically allow you to make the game as easy or as hard as you want (some even neutralize the danger of the dreaded spikes). The series also gets easier as you go along, the first two are a lot more brutal than the last two, at least in my opinion. The only problem is if you want to abuse the Cyber Elves it can be a little grindy (which I don't like), though it becomes less so as the series progresses.
Ultimately I really love the Zero series though I don't revisit it as often as the others, probably due to it being more narrative heavy. It's solid from start to finish and the artwork is really classy. There's a lot of little touches and references in the series that shows they put love into it.

Because I have the DS collection of those and WOULD LIKE TO PLAY THEM ALL but I can't handle too much more of this psychopathic design. (I went back and tried again. Gave up again. I sincerely hope the rest of the game is easier than THIS ONE FRIGGIN JUMP. Maybe I should just back off and grind nightmare souls... another annoying element of the game. You know what? I think I'll just re-start the game on Easy and use the Ultimate Armor cheat. I DON'T CARE ANYMORE.)
And those would have to at least have better translations, right?
The DS version also has the casual friendly "Easy" mode which runs through all four games as if it's one giant game with all of the Cyber Elves unlocked and probably some other changes I'm not aware of because I never played through it that way. I strongly recommend giving the games a shot on their own first. They're a little jarring coming off of the comparatively easy X games but it's not unmanageable.
If I may ask, where is the jump you're stuck on? Because there is a specific jump where you pretty much cannot beat the game with X if you missed the Jumper part. Which you can miss if the reploid you need to rescue for it dies, and then it's gone forever. Shadow Armor X can make it through that part technically, but good luck beating the boss.
