So...thoughts on Superman v Batman? Suicide Squad? Deadpool?
The new trailer for BvS is going to make fans stir crazy. It begs for people to want more, which a teaser or trailer should do by definition. The introduction of Lex was pretty slick. The play on "The red coats are coming" is a really hard sell, but it works. For those who don't get the reference it doesn't matter much, but if you do get it, it's a pretty huge spoiler. But the delivery of it is pretty perfect.
The really, really, really bad thing about the trailer is Mrs. Kent. For almost ten seconds she tells Superman that he can be a savior, a hero, and could end all evil. ... And then she's like "or fuck it". I literally laughed out loud when that scene was played as it serves no purpose. "You can do anything...or not" is what it boils down to. I get what they are going for, but the writing...Buzz, your girlfriend.
Last thing is second. DEADPOOL has me worried. When an actor says "If it sucks, it's my fault, but if it is good the director gets all the credit". The focus on it being a hard R, without having a redband out also worries me. In my little blue eyes KICKASS was a perfect hard R comic movie, while KICKASS 2 was the worst. DEADPOOL is a character like no other, and from the trailer I don't see much of his character, which again, worries me. The jury is out until I see it, but I am excited for it. BOLD move for Mrvel to make a hard R movie, which will create a backlash. Not much of one, but it will get people talking.
The jokes also seem pretty terrible, so that worries me too. I'm always iffy about movies that are focused on a character that might only play a cameo in a flagship film. But who knows? Can't rule it out.
So, SUICIDE SQUAD. The anti-Avengers movie that will probably play out like an Avengers movie. It definitely shouts "This is stupid", but that 's not a bad thing. It looks like the movie equivalent to Lollipop Chainsaw or Bayonetta. It's loud, stupid, vulgar, and gives dudes boners. There is nothing wrong with that. But why in the world doesn't the trailer show a distinct antagonist or protagonist? Or maybe I missed it. The trailer just shows stuff and says "Bad guys doing good things" or something like that.
I don't know man. I know guys really can't wait to see the camera hump Harley Quinn, and that cameos will run rampant. No clue how they'll be able to establish all of the characters involved in under three hours. Going through a dossier of all of these guys (and gal) would not cut the mustard for me.
There's like, what, ten people in this squad? How to relate to ten people in such a short amount of time.
It will be interesting to see how they handle that.
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
I agree with you on Superman v Batman, both the positives and the missteps in that trailer, particularly about Mrs. Kent and her "Or not" moment. It felt like they had a great build up with all the shots of Supes rescuing people and then just kind of threw it away in an instant. Also, Jeremy Irons as Alfred...I will wait to see his performance in theaters, and I have incredible respect for Irons' work, but his few bits in the trailer just didn't work for me. Conversely, I'm far more curious how Gal Gadot's Wonder Woman will figure in.
Deadpool... I've had faith Marvel could do a hard R movie after the 2004 Punisher movie. It wasn't perfect, but it did the job(War Zone, on the other hand...). I am hoping to see more fourth wall breaking, but the trailer does make me think a 13-year-old put it together.
As for Suicide Squad, I think they will pick a couple of characters to be the main ones out of the group, with everyone else being there, sort of like Terry Crews and Randy Couture in The Expendables. Deadshot, Joker, Harley, and maybe Boomerang will probably be the leads, while the rest serve in backup support roles.

But you have to admit, Mrs. Kent's speech is hilarious. Sounds like something a high school football coach who has given up on life would give. "Now go out there and give 'em hell. Real smashmouth football! Now go out there and let's win this game! ... or not. I mean, whatever".
Suicide Squad will probably be the reverse Avengers. I mean story-centric wise. They'll start off as a group, and depending on how things go, later we'll get the solo films. But they will certainly use Harley A LOT. Plus Will Smith. My mind says that this movie will be flashback heavy that takes a "Twisted Metal Black" approach to many of the characters bio.
Deadpool is the most interesting of the three for me as it has the best chances of being great or terrible. We have a screenplay by four different writers, some newcomers, and also a guy who helped pen Zombieland. I agree with Ack that the trailer sounds like it was written by someone who isn't old enough to see the movie.
Deadpool certainly has the source material to be a classic like Robocop. Unfortunately is also has the source material to be Robocop 3. Deadpool also works so well on paper because you provide the voice and action. This movie NEEDS Ryan Reynolds to be likable and not just a cockturd like he's been in almost every movie he's in. If he's just an arrogant jerkwad I doubt people who are past puberty will like the character.
The ugly jokes in the trailer are pretty bad. I believe there's a joke about avocados knocking boots. Not sure if that premise could ever be funny.
Who knows? This could be a new Marvel Universe where we boobs. It could turn out to have the wit, action, and fun of Kick Ass or Kick Ass 2 (Dear God, please don't let it be like Kick Ass 2). Either way, it's fun when a movie comes out where you have no idea what to expect from it.

Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Last night, my wife and I watched:

Beyond the Black Rainbow (2010). It is a surreal, horror/science-fiction film that is very heavy on early-1980s style and very light on substance. The film looks like a collaboration between late-1960s Stanley Kubrick and mid-1970s Dario Argento, and its fantastic soundtrack pays tribute to some of the best synth scores of the 1980s. When viewing the film, I placed my critical thinking skills in sleep mode, and I very much enjoyed the film's hypnotic qualities. Accordingly - and consistent with the A.V. Club's review - I recommend this movie to someone looking for an audio-visual experience (but I probably would not recommend it to someone looking for a perfectly paced and plotted storyline).
Beyond the Black Rainbow is currently streaming on Netflix; so, if you have the service, you can watch it instantly.

I agree, Beyond the Black Rainbow excels aesthetically. But the plot is incoherent and at times takes a nose dive into entirely different genre territory for no real reason. I like it, but I have a tough time recommending it to folks without letting them know about this issue.

Compared to Black Moon and Valerie & Her Week of Wonders, I found Beyond the Black Rainbow's surreal plot shockingly conventional and easy to follow.Ack wrote:I agree, Beyond the Black Rainbow excels aesthetically. I have not. But, after watching the trailer, I must see it.
(Also, if you have not seen Black Moon, you can feel free to skip it. It is pointless and boring, and even though I am a fan of surreal cinema, I hated it.)
Re: What was the last movie you've seen?
Picked up this gem for $0.50 the other day.

I was going in with low expectations and was hoping for some heavy cheese, but man this has to be one of the biggest monstrosities of a low budget film I have ever seen. They literally took a low budget Asian film edited the shit out of it, did a grade a godawful dubbing, meshed in about 5 minutes some hilariously bad "Ninja" combat, and then created the most incomprehensible stories to pretend the footage was connected. The ninja scenes are so bad it's funny which makes the film worthwhile, but I almost feel sorry for the film they butchered. I know it must have been a bad film that they could cheaply acquire, but man oh man did they ever turn it into a hideous abomination.
Favorite part was the opening with the Napoleon Dynamite ninja
