I always got a sense that he was a really great guy just from watching the Nintendo Direct videos.

That's the last link I'll post about this situation, and it is well worth reading.
That was a great read. Thanks for posting.

Why do you guys believe Miyamoto would be a good CEO?

That image says a lot about him, but also for better or worse was why Nintendo is where it is now. Sure there's a board, but he was the lead and guided the company. Sure he was president, but as he said, he really was in his mind a game maker and a gamer at heart. He cared not for hardware specs or other foo foo, he wanted something that would be fun to play and make games on and one that even more people than before could enjoy. That gave us the highly selling and well snubbed Wii, but it also gave us that wonderful DS and that funny meme about 'it prints money' with dollar bills flying out of that gba/exp port on the bottom of it.

I wish they had done more not really with the Wii but the WiiU to capture more game makers as it's hurting them, but despite that you also have the 3DS which got some awesome wide support and still rocks good sales despite the emerging and intruding android gaming box/tablet/phone market. I grew up enjoying this guys work, he knew his stuff bar none when it came to 2D and 3D video games, and there is no dispute to that fact at all. He made things that works for kids, adults, and kids through adults in the same package too.

My mind wanders now to who will run the ship? There were just 2 directly under him, one being Miyamoto, the other an unknown. I'd almost hope the unknown would do it, yet keep the public face and care that Iwata had with the public going forward if only to keep Miyamoto unencumbered so he could still guide some games directly. As lead of that entire outfit there would be no time for that, just a lousy exec producer credit. Yet, if he did guide it he has groomed enough people to think as he did, and I think the guy would be a wise and playful like CEO again and a welcome public face replacement. His death is a huge loss, not just for Nintendo but the industry on the whole and few if any could fill that space as well.

Because Iwata wasn't just some suit business man that didn't care about fans or video games but only cared about numbers and money. I don't want that to change, and I get the same impression from Miyamoto. Maybe there's a dozen CEO candidates at Nintendo that are also "gamers in their hearts," but I know that Miyamoto was there from the beginning.

If nothing else, he has a similar love for games, has executive-level management experience with the company, is a well-loved and respected public face, and seems the most obvious choice to those with relatively little knowledge of Japanese corporations.

I wonder if the Yamauchi family will attempt to reassert control. Hiroshi Yamauchi seemed quite pleased with how Iwata had done.

To quote the article posted above...

"If Iwata is to be remembered for anything, it should be for having nurtured and protected the creative environment that allowed games like Splatoon to exist."

Why wouldn't Genyo Takedo be a good choice? He's been with Nintendo since 1972, longer than Miyamoto actually. He's done a lot of impressive things with the company:

Sure, he's a great choice. He's just not as well known to westerners, hence why they're not advocating for him. They know Miyamoto.

There must be something very wrong with me that on a day with such distressing news about my country, this made me even sadder. But it did. He seemed like a great man, nice guy, more friendly than Miyamoto imo and waay nicer than the previous one. I was looking forward to where he would take the company, because unlike Samaguchi he really seemed to be willing to learn from his mistakes and change course.

RIP Iwata san. And thanks for the great gaming memories.

Exactly. Even in my post (forgot his name) I said he'd make a good choice for it, but I do go into how Miyamoto has his influence. It's more just a matter of who has the friendlier public face on the larger scale and it's Miyamoto. Takedo is no slouch, not with Pilotwings, Punchout, StarTropics, and a few others along with some quality arcade games. Maybe he is as nice and open as Iwata, but he's definitely not tried to be a public face at all.
