Saturn KoF 96 and Racketboy's RAM cart

Post by sugarbaron »

I've been having trouble playing KoF 96 on my Jap saturn while using the Action Replay 4-in-1 (latest 2.02 software version). The game loads fine but during fights some characters will appear as black blocks, or just be totally invisibile. I've even had the game freeze/crash once. The game works fine with the official 1MB RAM cart, it just seems to be messed up with the Action Replay cart. The cart works great with every other game I've tried, the likes of X-men vs SF, Metal Slug, KoF 97, etc.

So what I'd like to do is buy Racketboy's RAM cart to replace my 4-in-1 (I only use it for the RAM anyway) but before doing so I wanted to know if anyone used it to play KoF 96 and whether or not it plays ok with no glitches/problems.

Any info appreciated!

I have heard that that game is only compatible with the RAM cart that was packaged with the game. why? I don't know.

Sorry -- I forgot to answer your email :(
The earlier KOF games came with custom carts that store many of the sprites and such on them. You can't play the game without those carts (good copy protection)

KOF 95 came with a ROM cart with some data on it for quick loading, but KOF 96 should use a standard 1 MEG RAM card.

Yeah KoF 96 just uses a standard 1MB RAM cart which is why I can't understand the problems it has with the Action Replay :/ You're right about KoF 95, that uses a special ROM of its own which has the sprites on.

I was just wondering if Racketboy's cart suffered the same sort of glitch with '96.

Does your 4-in-1 work with other 1 MEG RAM games? Is this a burned '96 or an original? If it's a burn you might want to find a new ISO source.

I've got the KOF '96 and an American Sega Saturn, and I've been using the 4M Auto Action Replay Plus and haven't had any of the problems you mention.

Hmm okay maybe my action replay cart is dodgy then :( Its an original disc with no scratches on or anything. The cart does work with other games such as Metal Slug, KoF 97, Fatal Fury... the only game its had a problem with is KoF 96.

Maybe I'll give Racket's RAM cart a go then ;)

Cheers for the help guys.
