It's ok, Ziggy. It's just that you're wrong and a big old dumbface stupidhead is all. Neener neener.Ziggy587 wrote:See, this is why I don't often post about things outside of video games. That's what I'm arguing against, though. "Fat acceptance" is accepting that someone's weight is none of your damn business. I agree 100% that being overweight is linked to a variety of health problems. There's also a lot of problems that you see in people who engage in various kinds of exercise (lots of joint stuff, for example). There is no one perfect way to live from a body health standpoint.Ziggy587 wrote:See, this is why I don't often post about things outside of video games. I don't think that it is, however. To me, at least, it appears that the "fat acceptance" movement is attempting to normalize obesity and obtain accomodations for obese people.MrPopo wrote:"Fat acceptance" is accepting that someone's weight is none of your damn business.
I agree that someone else's weight is not really my business, but at the same time, there is not, IMO, any compelling reason to endorse obesity, pretend that obesity is healthy or aesthetically appealing, or provide special accomodations to obese people that are unnecessary for people who maintain a healthy weight. (At the same time, I do not think anyone should be ridiculed for his or her weight, since the ease with which someone maintains a healthy body weight varies greatly from person to person.)

I think I see where Popo and Ziggz are coming from.
I believe Popo is saying "Not hurting anyone, nunyabiz".
I believe Ziggy is saying "By hurting yourself you hurt others".
Both valid points.
At the end of the day, we all like pizza. Wait. Do black people like pizza?

At this point, obesity is pretty normal in the US. So it may not be a desirable norm, societally speaking, but it is very nearly the norm.prfsnl_gmr wrote:I don't think that it is, however. Eh.
Shopping at Wal*Mart and shopping at The Fresh Market is usually a different experience as far as the display of body fat.
So does obesity and income play a factor? My guesstimation is "yes".

Admittedly it's also usually a different experience as far as the display of income for those two.Luke wrote: Shopping at Wal*Mart and shopping at The Fresh Market is usually a different experience as far as the display of body fat.
Generally speaking, the higher the average income of a country, the more likely it has obese people, but generally those individuals living in a more poverty-dense county in the US are more prone to obesity.
Here's an interesting read on the topic from the American Diabetes Association:

First off, let me just say that (since it's impossible to tell from text without tone of voice and body language) that I'm not being hostile and I'm not mad. So, Ack, no need to cut the tension with a blue text posts. Also, I must admit that I'm a horrible writer at times. Sometimes it's hard for me to get my true feelings across in words. So, I'm not putting the blame totally on your for not understanding exactly what I mean.MrPopo wrote:That's what I'm arguing against, though. You still don't get exactly what I mean. I completely understand the original intent for fat acceptance. I just feel that the lazy type of fat person (the kind that only has themselves to blame) hears it as "It's OK to keep living the way you're living."
Re: What Made you Smile/What Ticked you off Today?
It IS ok for them to keep living the way they're living. They won't live as long as you and probably won't have as high a quality of life as you. But it's ok for them to be living that way.Ziggy587 wrote:You still don't get exactly what I mean. I completely understand the original intent for fat acceptance.
