Beyond that, I look to GameFAQs, Hardcore Gaming 101, and sites like this for news. Basically the best "news" for me is upcoming release dates and some reviews.

I am also partial to Falcom and JRPG fanpages. As well as gaming sites that cater specifically to far-leftists and social justice warriors.
So, you just have more options than some of us do?

Ha ha oh man you made me scare my dog.

I love to watch Pat's videos because that dude is a legit freakshow. It's like a car wreck that you just can't stop staring at even though you know you shouldn't. What you are seeing is exactly who he is. That's the real deal Pat Contri. I think a psyche grad could write a thesis on this guy no joke. This man hired a dominatrix to whip him in one of his Genesis videos and put that shit on the internet. I'm not trying to belittle Pat, because some of his videos are legit funny, and he obviously means what he does. But the NES punk is certifiably crazy town.

Imagine that face, that exactly look rushing over to you as a complete stranger at the flea market he did those early videos at (Kobey's downdown san diego.) Long story short, pair of friends from back then went one weekend, ended up getting some good games, a tg16(which you know he loves) with some games. He saw it, stalked them a bit, then ran up all bug eyed like some japanese school girl all giggly and wanting to look in the bag. I don't recall nor want to all the details, but it took one most their self control not to punch him out, the other took a picture with him dangling their goodies like a fish on a pole style, to get him to go away. They went on about it the weekend after to me about it as they were still creeped out and wanted to share and know if I knew who he was. I wasn't kidding when I said head case, he's got a bad case of needing attention and self affirmation or gets weird. His own buddy in videos Ian who runs one of the Luna Games talked smack to me at the shop about his quirks, he scares people. :) Go find that pawn stars he was on for the NWC, he had no intent to sell, he wanted the national attention, and probably see if he could get a legit collector to dangle the real dough too I would imagine. I stopped paying attention, watched that episode once, but it's the only one I'll not watch again.

The places I listed are all about non-crazy pants non-fanboy news, they just cover the details. Some will do reviews, some don't do them at all, but they're on the level and that is getting harder to come by these days with the highly immature fanboy gaming media.

I usually get my decoder ring out and utilize it to decipher Kotaku and IGN. I don't particularly care about anyone's opinion on any of the news, so those are usually the easiest places to strip it out.

If I find something I need to know more about I'll just look it up, or go to the source that was cited.

Sad to say, they're where most of the news rounds begin, so it's just much simpler to start there.

A little perusing on the video side of things has me interested in video series like The Daily Fix, Daily News, etc, just a quick rundown of the gaming news for that day, no nonsense, to the point.

I like the idea, but I do wish stuff like that could be found on its own channel. In most cases, its in there with other stuff, and throws off the point of subscribing if I have to dig through every other one of the 1,000 videos a day these people post.

This is why Google needs to make it possible to subscribe to specific playlists. There's a lot of channels I like that also constantly put out some sort of content I just don't care about.

Never cared much for Pat's videos one way or the other. Personality is a little too in your face for me. I only heard one thing involving Ian which was a podcast and he came off like a holier than thou douche bag. They're both Nintendo apologists to the death as well, which I find insufferable.

Back in the day, I used to read a ton of Kotaku, Joystiq, and 1up. That was also when I was way into next-gen gaming, getting hammered, and social media. Then I grew up.

Now, it's a modest life of Hardcore Gaming 101, Retro Collect, and the occasional glance at Game Informer (print). And a nice stout beer every now and then.

But I wonder, technological advances to retro systems aside, is there really that much news to have on retro gaming? Unreleased games, homebrews, backroom stories, and what else? I feel retro gaming can sometimes be like the oldies station: always full of good hits, but if you think about it, always the same songs (except with homebrews).

There will always be tons of retro styled games that need coverage, plus there's things like Retron 5 and Retro Freak that come out. I don't think there's enough retro news that happens for a monthly magazine or even a weekly show, but it happens.
