They did get a few tears out of me during the funeral scene though :P .
It took me a second before I realized you were NOT talking about Mad Max. I was confused.

Ack wrote:Yeah, the Mad Max series goes through a big shift between the first and the second film. The second movie basically redefined how we view the post-apocalypse through a new punk-chic lens. It has inspiration from movies like A Boy and His Dog, but it built on that and in turn inspired a huge line of rip-offs, parodies, and homages on its own in film and television.

The first movie isn't nearly there yet with its apocalypse, it's more at the start of the world collapsing. The truth is, a lot of folks watch it and think it's a pretty normal day in Australia. But it's still a necessary starting point for the hero of the series.
Yeah, the first Mad Max sets up the character but I think the opening narration to Mad Max 2 does just as good a job of setting up the character. I saw the first Mad Max once and have never felt the desire to see it again, while I have watched the others multiple times.

The Man Who Wasn't There (2001)

A neo-noir crime drama (and dark comedy). A barber finds out his wife's cheating on him with her boss, and said barber comes up with a scheme to extort money from the situation to finance a crazy business deal. Things of course don't go as planned, and a great many calamities result from the situation. The Coen brothers' work is always above par, and this film was no exception. It made me laugh out loud a few times (the French piano teacher was my favorite bit), and the ending wasn't entirely predictable. If you like noir and offbeat humor you'll like this. Also UFOs!

The Missouri Breaks (1976)

A local land baron gets fed up with horse thieves in his area, so he hires a regulator to come down and put an end to the problem. The head horse thief is played by Jack Nicholson and the regulator is played by Marlon Brando of all people. Marlon Brando was in complete nutso mode with this movie (he reminded me of Klaus Kinksi at times even), and critics at the time regarded his performance as absurd. However, I thought Brando's work in this movie was brilliant. You know you're doing something right when you make Nicholson look like a normal person by comparison. Brando even went so far as to invent his own weapon for this film:

In a May 24, 1976 Time magazine interview it was revealed that Brando "changed the entire flavor of his character — a bounty hunter called Robert E. Lee Clayton — by inventing a deadly hand weapon resembling both a harpoon and a mace that he uses to kill. He said, "I always wondered why in the history of lethal weapons no one invented that particular one. It appealed to me because I used to be very expert at knife throwing." (Wikipedia)

The actual plot of this film is very simple, but Brando and Nicholson both did a fine job and bring a lot of fun to the screen. And watching Brando both intellectually and mechanically outmaneuver the horse thieves he hunted was thrilling at times. I enjoyed this western.

I really have come to appreciate the first Mad Max more after watching it more than once. It had commentary on the decline of civilization, ineffectiveness of police, and vigilante justice/revenge.
