I imagine it is scary for countries like Spain, Portugal, and Italy with struggling economies.Erik_Twice wrote:I fear this is the beginning of the end of the EU. After this, the issue is not just Greece announcing the print of IOUs but the mere fact that Cameron will inevitably call for a referendum and Britain will leave, even if it destroys itself in the proccess.
Guess we Europeans are destined to go back to killing each other trade tariffs. You can't imagine how depressed I feel right now.

Crap. Not sure if it's from NPR or the BBC, but there's an article from one of them that is succinct and informs everyone about what exactly is going on in Greece. If someone finds it, please share.
It's something close to "All you need to know about Greece when you don't anything about it".

I'm not worried about the economic future of Spain, but the political future of Europe. I don't want to go back to an Europe of economic warfare, hatred and nationalism.Jmustang1968 wrote:I imagine it is scary for countries like Spain, Portugal, and Italy with struggling economies.

Dude, we had member states committing genocide against each other a decade ago. Of course there's a huge difference.Jmustang1968 wrote:Not sure how that is much different than now.

Maybe the EU will have a big war to pit brother against brother. It worked out ok for us in the end.
Edit: It amuses me that Europe made a song called The Final Countdown; it seems appropriate.

I don't mind that no came out afterall. I would have minded 6 months ago, but the economy is in such a dire state right now that using the euro or not makes no difference anymore.
Yeah I know it doesn't make much sense, but basically they fucked things up so hard they might as well go all the way. I think the economy will probably contract another 5% by the end of the year.
What's more scary is just how soviet their entire workings are. I understand people are desperate and angry and humiliated, but right now the governing party have basically gone amuck, with no law or court able to keep them in check. And their supporters are so fanatical it's like we are already in a civil war.
Even if the debt gets restructured now, Greece just became even more of a country where you need to ask for political favours to get stuff done. Syriza supporters just say that Greeks don't bow down their head, but to me it seems like they sure like bowing their head in return for favours. And at least personally, I don't find it any less humiliating to bow my head either the person I'm bowing to speaks German or Greek.
yeah color me bitter and angry, if I could get all my loved people out of it, the country could go fuck itself Greek style for all I cared. I hate the government and all 30-40% of Greeks who support it and think they have the moral superiority to insult and oppress other people, just like religious people and communists did in the past....well they are communists I guess, so they have that down.

There are some advantages to going bust and re-starting the whole machine. Sometimes you are far enough in the hole that trying to "make good" is either impossible or too painful to really be reasonable.
Re: So the whole world is kind of falling apart...
Yeah, but it is painful no matter what you do. Going bust is still going to hurt. It's already led to steadily rising extremism on all political fronts in the country. It may well continue to get worse before it starts to get better.marurun wrote:There are some advantages to going bust and re-starting the whole machine.
