I would be interested to know FF VII size without the cut scenes , but you can't deny the cut scenes themselves added to the game. Its definitely not a negative.

But yes, the actual models are very small. It's texture data that's the issue. A list of coordinates isn't going to take up a lot of disk.

The low resolution and primitive tech was still cool back then because OMFG POLYGONZ. I'm not really sure how you could say 16-bit influenced the 32-bit polygon nature of that game though.

They were from two different eras in video game history. That's like comparing Super Mario World to Super Mario 64. Also, as Exhuminator pointed out, the screen shot you used isn't true to how the game actually looks on real hardware.

I think there is some miscommunication happening here. Even if we use your screenshot, you still don't see whats happening here? I didn't say the 16bit influenced the 32bit games, I said the 16bit limits influenced the game. The developer probably wanted to do a lot of things but couldn't due to the snes limits, when the PSX came out there was this whole new world or possibilities that inspired them to be very creative.

Games like Lomax, Rayman, and Symphony of the NIght can be easily mistaken for a SNES/Genesis game. You can't say the same thing about FF VII.

The same argument could be used for SMW and Mario 64. They could have made Mario a 2D scroller like Yoshi Story but they didn't. The limits of the 2D side-scrolling on the SNES made them make one of the best 3D platformers.

Raiden is the God of Thunder, yet he only uses lightning.

If he is the God of Thunder, why in the world does he never use it and fly around on lightning bolts? Couldn't he summon a cloud to whisk him away as a booming thunder is heard?

Not that Mortal Kombat needs to make a lick of sense, but c'mon and use some friggin' thunder.

This is where I get a little confused; you used an image of the fight sequence of FF VI VS FF VII. As in you're saying that FF VI inspired FF VII's combat setup. But in that regard, it would be more accurate to say that the 8-bit FF games influenced FF VII's combat system. That basic combat design existed in the NES days, carried through the SNES era, and into the PS1 era. So what I'm saying is the 8-bit era of FF design was still influencing FF design well into the PS1 era, and is largely deserving of more credit in that aspect than the 16-bit FF games solely are.
Symphony of the NIght can be easily mistaken for a SNES/Genesis game.
I can't totally agree, because there are portions of that game which I don't think would have been possible on the SNES or Genesis.

I agree with you there. Having the power to push texture mapped polygons, play Red Book audio music, display gigantic sprites, play FMVs, utilize a more complex controller, and having far more storage space in general were all important factors in inspiring developer creativity in the PS1 era.

I also agree with you that limitations can inspire creativity as well. Sometimes less gives birth to more.

Yeah, I think you are right on that. Still, after trying the update more, I'm not sure it's something I really want to write about, I'm on other stuff now.

A couple days ago I got the remants of my Magic collection out, I actually still have some expensive cards around, I guess they didn't pick them up when I sold most of my stuff. I also found my proxy "classic" decks, I have a Necro deck, a Trix variant and a very old-school Rock. Man, I really miss the game, but when the prices are so insane I can't justify it because it's fun, but it's not more fun than every other game I would ever want put together. There's also the fact that as amazing as the game is theory (breaking symmetry, metagaming, resource conversion and so on), in practice it is a very swingy game in which matchups matter a lot and many decisions are automatic.

So yeah, I think I'll simply proxy up some more classic decks and keep them around for the ocassional play.
