Together Retro: Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Re: Together Retro: Mortal Kombat Trilogy
I think there's gonna be more people playing various games in the series at this point
I thought that was the original plan, then I was told it was the *game* called MKT. 5th gen games are a bit tough for me to do, because I went from 4th straight to 6th.

Nice. I have this on PS1 (first print release), and on N64, the latter which is a completely different game from PC, SAT, and PS versions. I used to have the SAT version but I sold it last year during some tough times. Been meaning to find the GH version on PS1 as its based on a revision patch that ironed out a few bugs and gameplay issues.
Re: Together Retro: Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Everyone is always quick to mention the limitations that came with the N64 being cartridge based. Don't forget the upside to this: Load times. The version on the Nintendo 64 came with some grave limitations, limiting the roster from 37 to 30, leaving out characters like Kintaro, Goro and the classic versions of Raiden, Kung Lao, Jax and Kano. The secret character Chameleon was replaced with a mysterious female ninja named Khameleon, which was exclusive to the console. There were some additions to this version though, including a brand new stage, The Star Bridge and fatalities were added for Motaro and Shao Khan. This version also added the ability to watch a video showcasing every fatality, babality, friendship etc.
With the CD-ROM versions of the game, load times create a problem for Shang Tsung. Hence the options to turn morphing off, or only to allow 2 extra characters to morph into (most that can fit into memory, I suppose) as well as the fact that you never fight against Shang Tsung in 1-player mode (IIRC).
Since the N64 has fast load times from the cartridge, Shang Tsung morphs aren't a problem. That, along with all the extra content it has, makes up for the missing characters (most of which are just dupes).
If I had to choose, I'd probably go with the N64 version.
Also, FYI, Wikipedia states that the PS version had 3 revisions. The Greatest Hits version being the last revision. If you care about having the best version in terms of bug fixes and better gameplay, then it might be worth it to go specifically for a Greatest Hits copy.
Re: Together Retro: Mortal Kombat Trilogy
MKT has a rather small scene in central, south America that run tournaments for it. I believe they use the GH version of MKT.
Perhaps the biggest concern with the N64 port is that its not based on any particular version like the other ports. The game was developed in house while the other ports were not. With MKT on PS1 each revision was striving towards playing closer to UMK3 which was the most competitive version of MK at the time.
N64 port has a rather rediculous juggle system that allows some insane combo possibilities -_-

Re: Together Retro: Mortal Kombat Trilogy
I remember renting Mortal Kombat II on my SNES, making it to Kintaro several times through tons of Raiden Superman spam, then getting utterly trashed by Kintaro. I think I'm going to have to join Ack in trying to beat the SNES version, though I'll have to pick a fighter.

I guess I'll be playing the PS1 version and the GEN version of UMK3 for this TR segment. 16-bit versions of UMK3 have much in common with MKT.

Re: Together Retro: Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Kintaro is a bitch. MK2 makes me sad, the copy I got for Christmas when I was a kid was jacked by my best friend within 6 months.
He sold it for $8. It was a $70 game.
Thankfully, I did complete the story at least once before that happen. I was subs. I was always subs. (I Beat MK3 on a Genesis 3 button controller with sub-zero ... I don't even understand how that's possible now)
