The problem with finding a game you REALLY like is....

Talk about just about anything else that is non-gaming here, but keep it clean

The problem with finding a game you REALLY like is....

Post by Scooter »

...is that you want to keep playing any chance you get until you reach the end!

A while back I bought a PS2 game based largely on the recommendation found on this site, the game is Drakan: The Ancient's Gates. This particular game is right up my alley on so many levels (pun intended). It is a great action adventure game with good controls, the ability to save at any time and an engrossing storyline. One review called it Tomb Raider with swords and that really is a good analogy and works for me since I'm a big Tomb Raider fan. The game's level of difficulty is challenging without being stupidly difficult and allows the opportunity for multiple tactics to work on a given situation depending on what your strengths and weaknesses as a player happen to be. Another thing I enjoy is that the enemies DON'T respawn. I've always found it tedious to have to kill everything AGAIN when you discover you need to revisit an aleady clear area.

Anyway, more to the point of the thread. While I am not the greatest gamer in the world, and it can take me a good while to finish a game, I find a slight sense of melancholy as I approach the end of any great game. While I can play it again if I so chose, it's like watching a great movie a second time, you just know what's going to happen and the thrill of discovery is just not there.

What great games do you wish you could forget entirely and play through again like they were new to you? My short list would be:

Tomb Raider
Ico
Shadow of the Colossus
Parasite Eve
Metal Gear Solid
Flashback
Out of This World
Heart of the Alien
Panzer Dragoon Saga
Ecco the Dolphin
Sonic Adventure

Okay, maybe the short list isn't all that short! There are lots of games I'd happily put on the 2nd tier of such a list.

That's one of the great things about Nethack. No matter how many times you've played, the next game is always new.

ooooh good question..

If I could forget any games I think I would pick mainly story based games like Resident Evil 1, Final Fantasy 9 and Enemy Zero. Action centered games I find are more fun the next time round as I've already gone thru the frustrations of learning the combat system or whatever and I can concentrate on just having fun. Having said that though I wouldnt mind a shot at playing Sonic 2 for the first time again.

I'm not much more than half way thru twilight Princess and i'm already limiting the time I spend playing it so that it lasts longer, so I'll add that one to list when I'm done.

Oh man, Zone of the Enders: The Second Runner is a game I wish I could play all over again without knowing what was going to happen. It seemed like that game just kept trying to one-up itself with epic setpiece battles. Wonderful.

I remember playing that for the first time and was completely blown away by what I thought a game could be. Sad state the series is in now, though.

I remember entering the cave with (what I would soon find out was) the T-Rex and wondering what the hell is that... then I saw it! Holy Shit moment right there!

I wish I could forget all of the solutions to Myst.

I find myself playing it everyone once in a while and just blowing through it because I can. I enjoyed the game a lot when I first played it because it was so challenging and the sense of discovery you had was really cool.

Now I know all of it's secrets...but I did cave in and buy a strat guide for it so it is my fault

My two favorite Rpg's i've played are Daggerfall and Morrowind i've spent countless hours on either one and i've never finished the main story. And i still like rolling up a new character every now and then because i still got something unexplored. But if i had at one point ever finished either one i would probably not play them anymore.
