[quote="Exhuminator"]Those of you who loved Retro Game Challenge may know there was a Japanese only sequel to it. Not too long ago, that sequel was fan translated into English. That means you can patch its ROM* and load said patched ROM through a DS flashcart, and indeed play Retro Game Challenge 2 completely in English on an actual DS. (Failing that approach, there's always DeSmuME or DraStic.)

Unfortunately R4 cards are illegal in the UK, and I'm not sure where to go about acquiring one. I've been wanting to get one for Game Center CX 2, Miles Edgeworth 2 and Fire Emblem 11.

Are all DS flashcarts illegal? Or just the R4? Because there are plenty of other alternative brands than the R4. (R4 + Wood is my personal choice though.)

I think the two you want to look at are the R4i Gold (make sure it's legit!) for basic compatibility, or a Supercard DSTWO for the Cadillac version. Most other cards aren't supported anymore. (I personally have too many, an original R4, an Acekard 2 and 2i, and an M3i Zero. None of them currently work on my 1.4.5 version DSi, sadly, but they're great on that cheapy DS Lite I picked up.)

It does sound like it applies to all flash carts, though. :(

It's been proven on GBATemp that the R4 plus the final version of Wood has the ultimate compatibility rating with the DS's entire library. That said, it's a vanilla card, no fancy bells and whistles like newer cards have.

Pretty sure it's all of them.

I'd want it to work on my DSi if possible.

I think with the updated kernel/loader file, Acekard 2 with AKAIO will achieve similar results. The nice thing about using an AK2 is bigger memory cards. I've got a 16GB card in mine. :)

AK2i will still work on 1.4.4 and under, I think the M3i will as well, but anything else and you've got to go with R4i or SCTWO. Either way, it sounds like it might be a pain for you to get one. :(

Retro Game Challenge has got some value behind it at $20-$30 card only. Game Center CX fandom driving up the price, or was it a limited print run? (Is XSeed as notorious as Atlus as a publisher?)

A bit of both, probably. It didn't sell that well, which is why we didn't get the sequel.

Fair question and the fair answer is I just don't care for how they were designed. Flagship(Capcom) captured the basic feel, look and sounds, but when it came to the dungeon designs and pathing to the game I really dislike it. It started off on a bad note with me playing the red one back in the day first. The original dungeon with the mining carts had me backtracking like 4-6x over the same junk repeatedly to get this item or flip this switch and it felt like so much unnecessary time wasting which continued further. Then I recall various places on the overworld where you're going from A->B location and you'd have to cut a path through tall grass, but it was like spots where literally it was hack, one step, hack over and over on a 1 link wide path and that just bugged me too. I just think Capcom missed on them taking a few liberties with layout/design that just wore my patience down to a bloody stump so I sold them and the guide I got with them at the time too. I don't think they suck though, flagship did alright with Minish Cap.

I currently have Ages(blue) here but I'm trading it for Advance Wars+Duck Tales GB when they decide to do it (off site but online.)

It's that, combined with a relatively small print.

XSEED is more interested in giving their buyers a cheaper initial price that's for sure, so in that regard they are less "notorious" than Atlus. Atlus however actually does do reprints for games which run out of stock, so they're stronger in that regard.
