Re: Recommend a "Modern" Horror Movie
Yes, that's the one I meant. Naming conventions are weird, seeing as it is never referred to as Texas Chainsaw 3D unless offered in 3D. My sister has the 3D Bluray... I have a normal Bluray. No difference besides the "3D".noiseredux wrote:you mean the recent one right? That was called Texas Chainsaw 3D in theaters? I thought it was great. It was by far the best of the 2000's Texas Chainsaw movies. I'd recommend this one as well.Forlorn Drifter wrote:Horror is far from one of the movie genres I should recommend in, but I have to throw a bone to one of my personal favorites.
Texas Chainsaw
The very poorly reviewed and received sequel-ish movie. I will say, if you haven't already made an opinion about the movie, that one does have to keep a somewhat open mind to what's going on, and why. The movie is both physical, violent horror, and psychological horror. I think people either tend not to see the second form of horror, don't understand it, or feel it isn't done well. Feeling it isn't done well is a fair judgement, but I'd say give it a try just to see.

Ya'all should see "It Follows."
Crazy atmospheric and creepy as hell. Disasterpiece did the music (same guy who did the Fez soundtrack).
It's kind of like...The Ring...with sex...which makes it sound terrible...but it's not
Was just in theaters, not sure if it's out on DVD/Blu yet.

yeah I really want to see It Follows. I've been listening to the sndtrk on Spotify actually.
Re: Recommend a "Modern" Horror Movie
Lots of good suggestions so far. I'll echo Cabin in the Woods, Scream 4, Jennifer's Body, Trick r' Treat, The Orphanage, Drag Me To Hell, Let the Right One In (and it's remake, Let Me in), The Conjuring, The Decent and You're Next. I found all of those excellent and thoroughly enjoyable.
Off of the top of my head, I'll add:
Insidious - Good haunting story that started off really strong and then petered out a bit with the ending, knocking it down from a solid 8/10 or 9/10, down to a 6 or 7. I still think it's worth a watch, though.
Hatchet - The boogyman/Urban Legend that's supposed to live in the swamp is real and he does not like unannounced visitors.
This is the first part of a trilogy, with the second probably being the strongest of the three. The first film is more of a traditional slasher, the second one goes all out and the third wraps things up quite nicely. There are also a good amount of cameos and references from earlier slashers, so if you like slashers this is pretty much a must see.
I also recently watched I Saw the Devil and Reincarnation (aka Rinne) and did a couple of write-ups on them. So if you want, you can find the link to them in my sig and see if they might interest you.
Oh, and Ginger Snaps came out in 2000, so if that's your cut-off point, than that one totally counts and you should see it.

Another one I remembered enjoying; this was as much a horror film as it was a dark sci-fi:

I ended up liking it a lot more than I thought I would.

It Follows
House of the Devil
The Innkeepers
For stuff that hasn't been mentioned.
Big Bad Wolves
Bedevilled
Stoker
Straw Dogs (remake)
Grindhouse
Even though a few of those aren't your typical horror films, they are all excellent and don't fit neatly into any other genre in my opinion.
Also, cosign on all the stuff noise mentioned below, except for Halloween II, and Lords of Salem. I can see the appeal of LoS for some, but Halloween II was just awful to me...Sorry B. Maybe I saw the wrong cut.
Oh, and I love the new Evil Dead, for multiple viewings.

Re: Recommend a "Modern" Horror Movie
I hated Halloween II in the theater. Then I saw the unrated cut on DVD and it just seemed like a different movie to me. I enjoyed it way more. BUT, I still wouldn't recommend it. LOS rules though.
Deathproof is one that I love and almost put on the list... except I'm not really sure I'd call it horror, yeah.
