I'll never forgot this movie and not for a good reason. No man should ever do the windmill with his exposed junk uncensored in a theatrical movie .

Last night, my wife and I watched John Wick. It was a pretty great. The only problem was that the action sequence at The Red Circle about half way through the movie was so awesome, that the remainder of the movie's excellent action sequences paled in comparison.

Tonight I watched Electric Dragon 80000V for the second time. I watched this via Netflix's DVD service a few years ago and loved it so I finally bought the DVD (which is unfortunately out of print so it took me a while to find a copy for less than $30).

It's a pretty awesome movie. The only thing I can really think to compare it with is Tetsuo: The Iron Man. But while Tetsuo is deep and powerful, this is more like Tetsuo's attractive airheaded cousin: a long music video that's cool for the sake of being cool and isn't too concerned about having anything to say.
The story is minimal: one guy, Dragon Eye Morrison is basically obsessed with electricity after a shock as a child damaged the "reptile-like" part of his brain: he's 80000 volts, gets into fights, plays electric guitar, and talks to lizards - working as a lizard-detective (finding people's lost pets). There's another guy, Thunderbolt Buddha, who's 2,000,000 volts and is radio-wave obsessed. He hates Morrison and kills his lizards. They fight. Crazy noise-rock plays through decent stretches of the movie. It's shallow but awesome.
I just wish I had a fancy audio setup so I could experience the 5.1 DTS soundtrack! But at least the DVD includes a CD soundtrack which I'm listening to now and am very pleased with.

I want to track down some other movies by this director, Sogo Ishii, at some point.
And I've been watching a lot lately... no idea how long I can keep it up!

GOSFORD PARK

A true delight. It's somewhat a combination of a mystery, a character piece, with bits of social commentary in dialogue and in style. And if you think you are not a fan of Ryan Phillipe, you will be...You will be.

Not only is this a great movie, but if you throw movie parties it is darned near perfect. Brew some tea, make some cucumber sandwiches*, invite friends over on a lazy Sunday and check it out.

*London broil would work if you're not into brunch.

The Babadook was a really well made film and it does what horror films do best: explore transgressive emotional states. It reminded me of Roman Polanski's Repulsion in some ways, which is always a good thing but with very different circumstances around the protagonist. But this movie didn't really resonate with me. I think I would have appreciated it more if I was a parent and/or a woman: the movie seems to focus on the "horror of motherhood" more than anything else. Even though I'm glad I saw it, it didn't really cause me to feel anything deeply on a personal level.

As almost every character in Star Wars has said, "I have a bad feeling about this".

The Babadook ... But this movie didn't really resonate with me.

Me neither. I think the last movie that actually left me scared was The Blair Witch Project. I wasn't scared in the theater, but when I got home, went to sleep, and woke up thinking I heard children laughing I was scared.

From there on out, I've preferred Horror-Action movies like Cabin in the Woods. Movies and tv shows that try to be scary (American Horror Story) are very off putting to me.

Ouija... starts off strong. An hour in we shut it off. Very rare we don't finish a movie. Bummer.
