Don't believe the haters. FFIII on the Nintendo DS is awesome. The job system is a little different than FFV - i.e., it is all about the stat boosts - but it is very well implemented. It is also "8-bit Final Fantasy" hard; so, be prepared for a challenge. (The final dungeon and boss rush is just insane.)

.....

On topic, I am trying to "complete" Rayman Legends by finding all of the teensies in the new levels. (I may or may not play back through all of the Origins levels.) While I am doing that, I have decided to see if I can get through a few arcade games. Gorf is up first. The arcade version of that game knocks off Space Invaders and Galaxian pretty hard, and I see why there was a never an "arcade perfect" release. It is fun though, and with a little practice, I expect to destroy the "flag ship" sometime this evening.

The giant rat in the mini dungeon is one of the greatest filter bosses I can think of in video games. It filters out the chaff, and only the strong will pass!

I really need to go back and beat that game someday.

It's a tough one. I would love to read your thoughts on it.

I find that when games are available on the "second gen trio" it generally goes like this...

Graphics:
ColecoVision > Intellivision > Atari 2600

Controls:
Atari 2600 > ColecoVision > Intellivision

Hence the reason I generally play multiple ports.

That's pretty accurate. You can't beat the joystick simplicity of the 2600, but if you want a better arcade accurate experience (most of the time), you gotta get in with a disc controller & multiple buttons.

You also have to consider that Atari, Coleco, and Mattel developed ports for each other's consoles in the 2nd gen. Venture was a Coleco game on the 2600 and it stinks. But not all of Coleco's 2600 games were bad, and M-Network made good stuff on the 2600.

I actually don't mind Venture on Atari 2600! At least not so far...

After some consideration I decided to abandon my "Year Challenge" - or at least put it on indefinite hiatus. I looked at the "rough draft" I had created some time ago and realized that I would eventually be forced to play modern games. Yuck. I'm finding out that I suck at playing games on a "schedule" anyway, I shouldn't even attempt to do so.

Were you planning on evolving into a mind flayer? Cause that could be problematic.

What do you mean evolving? I am already a mind flayer, but I simply can't read his thoughts on FFIII until he plays the game (and lowers his mental defenses to an appropriate level).

Haha, ah, you guys. Sorry to rain on your parade, but I'm actually already an unintelligent undead. Surprised you hadn't realized that.
